From Mystical Creatures to Kittens
From mystical creatures to kittens, sixth-graders were challenged to build a crate for their pet as seen in these classroom photos.
“We wanted a mystical creature so we created a wrap around net for the crate,” explained Aarya Jayam who helped build the crate with Alina Samoylov and Hadley Sweet.
Students designed and modeled a pet crate using one-inch and half-inch cubes. Students enjoyed using their creativity to collaborate in selecting a pet and finding crate dimensions that were appropriate for their pet and met the constraints of the project.
Math Teachers Kirsten Frantom and Maria Lee challenge their students with this pet crate project to help them grasp the standards. “I find that the creativity and element of student choice inherent in this project elicit high levels of student engagement. Also, collaborating with peers and working with the physical models lead to a deeper understanding of the concepts involved,” Mrs. Frantom said.
Principal Bids a Nostalgic Farewell
Dear Daniel Wright Families,
Wow, what a year it’s been! As the school year comes to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on all the incredible memories we've made together. From start to finish, it’s been a whirlwind of laughter, dancing, singing, and adventure.
Remember playing True Confessions of a Principal at our opening assembly? And don't forget the Principal Pajama and Popcorn Party, along with the spectacular solar eclipse! Watching it together as a school was nothing short of magical. Of course, we can’t overlook the invasion of cicadas – which is adding an unexpected buzz to our final days. Each day at Daniel Wright Junior High has been filled with excitement and new experiences.
We've also worked hard to create a positive and supportive school environment. Implementing a positive approach to discipline, including caring conversations with adults and restorative practices, has helped build a strong sense of belonging for all our students. It's been wonderful to see everyone grow and thrive in this nurturing atmosphere.
I’ll miss being your Friday DJ with some very special students showing off their best dance moves and celebrating the end of the week in style. Joining the band at the pep assembly brought the spirit of music and teamwork alive, energizing me more than you will know. And who could forget our first trip together to Great America? The thrills, the laughter, (RAIN), and the camaraderie made it a day to remember.
It has been an absolute honor serving this incredible community as your principal. I am confident that the wonderful tradition of excellence will continue as our incoming principal, Jessica Groncki, joins the team next year. I know she will bring her own unique flair and dedication to our school.
Thank you for all the support, enthusiasm, and joy you’ve shared this year. I wish you all the very best in your future.
Warmest regards,
Kendra Perri
Daniel Wright Junior High School Principal / Director of Curriculum

Asian Pacific American Heritage
The roots of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month can be traced back to 1976, when Jeanie Jew, president of the Organization of Chinese American Women, contacted government officials in response to the lack of Asian Pacific representation in the U.S. bicentennial celebrations that same year. The observance began in 1979 as Asian Heritage Week, established by congressional proclamation. In May 1990, the holiday was expanded further when President George Bush signed a proclamation making it month-long for that year. On October 23, 1992, Bush signed legislation designating May of every year Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The month of May was chosen to commemorate two significant events in history: the immigration of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869 (Golden Spike Day). The diversity and common experiences of the many ethnic groups are celebrated during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with numerous community festivals as well as government-sponsored activities.
