Under the guiding principles of our districtwide initiative, the Positivity Project, the #PositivityInAction mindset is our top priority. Because of our goal to inspire students to build positive relationships and become their best selves, we invite you to follow this Positivity Project Calendar. Note: We have made a few changes to this calendar; All adjustments are located on our District Events Calendar.
This calendar outlines all 24 character strengths, 1 highlighted per week. Our teachers create engaging and impactful lessons — differentiated by grade-level — and share through presentations, student recognitions, classroom discussions, and building-specific displays.

People with the character strength of optimism expect the best from the future and work to achieve it.
Mrs. Hoehing has been teaching in Lake Shore for 35 years, 34 at Violet! With age comes wisdom and Mrs. Hoehing's outlook on life is refreshing. She has stayed a Shorian for so many years because of the people. In particular, past Principal Mr. Kennedy made her feel right at home from day 1, and all of the amazing educators she has worked with since then. It is the feeling of fall, the excitement of the beginning of a new school year, and meeting new students. It fills her heart. Lake Shore is truly her home away from home.
Her perspective on teaching and learning hasn't changed; She appreciates her students and is grateful for the memories they create and share together. She said, "One particular memory that stands out is when I had 5 students during Covid in my class and their parents were all in my fifth-grade class, the same class! On occasion I even called the students their parents' name!"
One word that she is bringing into the new year is SHINE.
Hoehing explained, "Shine is my word for 2025 because life brings us so many challenges that it is a reminder for me to feel the joy that surrounds me or shines on me. It also reminds me to bring light to the lives of others with kindness and positive energy. This Violet All-Star teacher wants to shine inspiration on her students so they can be their best self."

People with the character strength of prudence plan for the future and achieve their goals by making careful everyday choices.
Lake Shore Public Schools is joining 537 local and 56 intermediate school districts across Michigan to celebrate January as School Board Recognition Month. Serving as a link between the community and classroom, school board members are elected to establish the policies that provide the framework for public schools, making prudent decisions on behalf of our stakeholders.
“In another year full of challenges for public education, our school board members persevered through the adversity of 2024 to provide the best possible education for our students,” said Superintendent Dr. DiPonio. “Celebrating School Board Recognition Month is one of the very small ways to express appreciation for all they do.”
The Board includes President Kurt Ziegler, Vice President Susan DeLong, Secretary Elizabeth Munger, Treasurer Amy Thomas-August, and Trustees Kenneth Gulock, Wendy Tobias, and Amber Hildebrand.
Join us to celebrate these extraordinary leaders who work tirelessly for kids at our next board meeting scheduled on Monday, January 27th at 6:30pm. To learn more about our Board of Education, visit http://lakeshoreschools.org/our_district/board_of_education.
School board members represent the views and priorities of their community in the complex system of maintaining and running a district’s public schools, DiPonio said. They also reinforce the principle of local control over public education, which is an important, highly valued aspect of education in Michigan.
No matter what challenges lie ahead for our district in 2025, our school board members will continue to govern to improve student achievement and provide exceptional education for all our community’s children. We thanked them with special deliveries from students, building level gifts, and a special dinner scheduled for later this month.
Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate PERSEVERANCE (1/20-24) and SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE (1/27-31).

OK2SAY Student Safety Program
See something? Say something.
OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at school students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Anyone can report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees, or schools. Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While continually evolving and reviewed annually, on this Safety and Security webpage you will find a list of recent and current safety measures implemented by Lake Shore Public Schools to provide the safest environment for our students and staff.
Inspiration
Special Visitor
At 2:30pm, Connor Opalewski, a kindergartener at Violet Elementary, was about to experience a surprise he would never forget. With careful planning and collaboration between his mom, Lisa Opalewski, teacher Mrs. Sheats, and Principal Mr. Pittinato, a very special guest was about to walk into the classroom.
Video clip of surprise visit: https://youtu.be/PN4teD9fsts?si=XyFUyJ_O2vQzvUgA
Vivienne Antishin, a 2020 graduate of Lake Shore High School, had been a family friend for 15 years and an important part of Connor’s life. Known affectionately as "Aunt Viv," Vivienne had been stationed abroad in South Korea for 14 months due to her military service in the Army. Now, as she moved on to her next assignment at Fort Liberty in North Carolina, she was finally able to return home for a heartwarming reunion.
Connor, who had not seen Vivienne in a long time due to her deployment, had no idea what was in store. The moment she walked into the classroom, the joy and surprise on Connor’s face were priceless, marking an emotional and unforgettable reunion for the pair. This heartwarming reunion was not just a moment for Connor, but also a testament to the sacrifices and dedication of those who serve in the military, bringing families closer together despite distance and time apart.
Thank you Vivienne for your commitment to the protection and service of this great nation. We appreciate the fact that our students are willing to enlist into our armed services, recognizing that this means days away from home and family, blood sweat, tears, sacrifice, and challenges. You are forever a Shorian and you make us all proud.
It is now 3 hours later and Lisa reported that Connor hasn't left Vivienne's side. She said, "They have been playing games, using a set of walkie talkies like in the Army, and drawing pictures. They are so cute together!"
Macomb Mathematics Science Technology Center
We are appreciative of Lake Shore's Macomb Mathematics Science Technology Center connection.
At the MMSTC, Sumaiyah Siddika (Warren Mott) and Ellie Morell (Lake Shore), delivered a 15-20 minute scientific research presentation on a topic of interest from the biology, physics, or chemistry fields.
Ellie and her research partner, Sumaiyah, studied the breakdown of vitamin C in orange juice over time. Since the human body cannot produce vitamin C, many people rely on orange juice as a key source of this essential nutrient. To ensure consumers get the most nutritional benefit, it’s important to understand how and when vitamin C levels are at their peak. Ellie and Sumaiyah measured the vitamin C content in 30 bottles of orange juice immediately after opening, two days later, and then again after an additional two days. Their research revealed a significant decrease in vitamin C levels over time, especially between the final trials and the initial measurements. They concluded that to maximize vitamin C intake, orange juice should be consumed soon after purchase and stored in a cold, dark place to slow the degradation process.

Mom Shannon Morell wrote, "The MMSTC program is a rigorous program, but for Ellie, born profoundly deaf, the challenge has been even greater. As an infant, Ellie was diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss. She would never be able to hear the sound of speech without a Cochlear Implant. At 13 months, she had surgery for her first Cochlear Implant, and a year later had a second surgery for another Cochlear Implant. She was two years behind in speech, but through a lot of speech therapy, by the time she began Kindergarten she was mainstreamed in a regular classroom. Through technology, she’s able to hear, but she’ll never have the full hearing capacity that a hearing person has. I’m really proud of Ellie for persevering through the program, and for her academic success. Through the program, I’ve seen Ellie’s self-confidence grow. Despite having a disability, Ellie has shown grit and determination. She’s taken advantage of opportunities, and is a true inspiration for the hearing impaired."
Additional presentations were given by Lake Shore High School's Stewart Gibson, Megan Morell, Eva Wilks, Cecilia Beaver, Brooklyn VanHoellbeke, and Sophia Hagan.
Because of the caliber of their research, several MMSTC students will present their findings to the community at the "People's Choice" Science Symposium later this month at the Butcher Community Center.
Lake Shore currently has 17 MMSTC students spanning grades 9-12.
The MMSTC is an advanced science, mathematics and technology center that aims to present students with an accelerated curriculum that is both challenging and engaging.
MLK-Inspired Assignments
One of the most influential African American leaders of all time is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” Dr. King made his mark by preaching nonviolent means of protesting segregation in the United States. He never gave up.
A special thank you to Mrs. Debrowski, Mrs. Manor, Mrs. Legato, and Mrs. Reno from Masonic Heights Elementary for showing us their creative MLK assignments!
Mrs. Legato's 5th graders started by reading about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and talked about his life, his character traits, and his dream. Then they completed a prewrite answering the following questions:
- What are your desires for all people?
- What will you be remembered for?
- What will you stand up for?
- How could you make America a better place to live?
- What movement could you join or create to improve others' lives?
Their final draft shares answers to those questions. We love reflective learning!
Mrs. Manor's students will be reading a few stories and reading a Scholastic News about Martin Luther King, Jr. Then, they will be discussing how even as first graders, we can do things to make our world a better place. Then, they will be doing a writing activity called, "My Own Two Hands". Students wrote about what they can do to make our world a better place. They also painted handprints on "My Own Two Hands" sheet that contained lyrics taken from the song by Ben Harper.
In Mrs. Reno's class, 2nd graders were asked to share a dream for the world just like MLK. Students explained #OtherPeopleMatter goals like "end homelessness so people don't have to freeze outside" and "end world hunger." Jaxon Shefferly wrote, "I have a dream that I wish everyone appreciates what their parents gives them." Wow, what a sweet hope for the world!

Wally's Frozen Custard
The Ahearn Family name is synonymous with Wally's Frozen Custard and Lake Shore High School's Senior Tommy and Sophomore Julianne Ahearn have been known as the custard kids for a long time. But this story isn't just about the famous dessert. It is about generosity led by a loving household.
Wally's is a Saint Clair Shores staple and the go-to place for a sweet tooth. Tommy and Julianne remember spending most of their time with their parents at a young age inside the business. They would be mostly observers at the time, curious what their parents were up to, but as months led to years, they would soon learn how to be entrepreneurs themselves and fell in love with it all.
School Store Manager of LSHS's Shorian Shop, Tommy and his dad Matt partnered with Marketing and Sales Teacher Mrs. Radlick and brought in a freezer to sell Cookie Monsters and Custard Cups. Tommy said, "It has been a big hit! I really enjoy selling our family product to my peers." The goal is to expand to other local places and continue to share their flavorful dessert with others.
Tommy's recommendation is the Signature 911 Sundae for only $9.11 includes 5 stacks of Vanilla, 4 stacks of Chocolate, Chocolate Dip, Cherry Dip, Butterscotch Dip, Sprinkles, Oreo, Graham Cracker, Fruity Pebbles, Strawberry Puree, Pineapple, Whipped Cream, and a Cherry! Sister Julianne's go-to order is the Detroit original Boston Cooler. Everything is so tasty!
But it isn't the quality product that impressed us the most. It is the promise they have made and kept to keep it affordable. "It means a lot to us to provide our product to students at-cost inside the Shorian Shop and sell for a reasonable cost at Wally's," shared Tommy. They continue to give back to the community as a way to not only advertise their custard, but to share kindness with others. They are #OtherPeopleMatter.
Before Wally's, Dad Matt was an Electrician and Mom Eliza chose a career path of Nurse. They quit their jobs and risked it all for Wally's, a dream they created together. Julianne describes her family as loving. She said, "We love our parents and wish we could stay a kid forever. My mom creates most of the recipes and is so hard working." Tommy chimed, "When others would tell my dad that Wally's wouldn't become a success, he pushed even harder." Matt and Eliza are wonderful examples of the kind of parents that are easy to admire.

Professional Development
Learning is essential to our growth and an indispensable tool for the Shorian Nation.
Lake Shore Public Schools staff continues to use Professional Development days as an important time to strengthen our skills as professionals and adapt to the ever changing learning, cultural, and social-emotional needs of our children. From the most effective and innovative instructional strategies to school safety and student well-being matters, investing this time and future calendar dates of 2/18 and 4/21 is a key to the on-going high level of success for our students.
In the Building Self-Regulation Skills session, Paraprofessionals, Resource Room teachers, ECSE/MICI/MOCI, K-2; Interventionists; Specials, and TC's explored positive behavior supports, social-emotional learning, sensory integration and visual strategies to foster self- regulation. By using these tools, individuals with ASD can better manage their emotions and responses leading to overall well-being and success in the school environment.
At the end of the day, staff were able to define self-regulation and explain its importance for students' academic, social, and emotional success and integrate self-regulation skill development into their teaching practices to foster a positive and supportive learning environment.
In addition to the training offered by Kellie Shelton, ASD Consultant for the Macomb Intermediate School District, our own Reframing Behavior series Ambassador and Special Education teacher Mrs. Schornak conducts professional development trainings for our elementary staff across the district. Her understanding of self-regulation skills has deepened as a result of her own experiences and she uses her expert knowledge to train her peers.
Mrs. Schornak explained, "For the past 14 years I have been training staff in practical classroom strategies that work based on non violent crisis intervention curriculum."
She feels supported by Principal of Violet Elementary Mr. Pittinato as he has provided her with time at staff meetings and part of the school day to help educators incorporate self-regulation skills into their daily classroom routines.
"I take those principles and apply them to the areas of need I see everyday in our schools. Whether it’s the classroom or the lunchroom or the playground, if all staff are on the same page in how we approach supporting students, we all win. I’ve received great feedback from staff that motivates me to continue sharing. Multiple staff had shared how using these strategies really work with their students. They want more visuals and ways to support their students," said Schornak.
Thank you Mrs. Schornak for serving as an accessible resource and incredible teacher-leader. Her visuals for behavior aids, knowledgeable feedback, and #OtherPeopleMatter mindset will help us all increase buy in, strengthen relationships, and deescalate behavior.
Foundational Driving Skills with ThinkFast Interactive
Our Juniors and Seniors from Lake Shore High School participated in an interactive, game-based quiz promoting foundational driving skills.
Foundational driving skills, good or bad, are learned as passengers at an early age, typically from parents or guardians. With the implementation of GDL laws, there is now an effective stopgap to ensure safe driving practices are learned in order to gain licensure, however, there’s an opportunity to have meaningful conversations about safe driving as passengers and future drivers prior to the start of the formal GDL training.
The Top 4 participants were Ironslyn Farley (won dance competition), Alex Dallas (won public speaking competition), Brendan Fernhout (top team scorer) and Savannah Mondry (top team scorer). Junior Alex loved the assembly, not only because he won $120 in Amazon gift cards, but also how interactive it was. He shared, “The assembly was uplifting. I will begin driver's training this Summer and enjoyed learning more about driving safely.” He plans to use the gift cards for more Funkos to add to his already extensive collection.
Video clip of assembly highlights: https://x.com/myLSPS/status/1879209353674412381
LSHS actively promotes the idea of safer driving by continuing to applaud Marketing and Sales and Media classes for their participation in Strive For a Safer Drive (S4SD) campaign and Courageous Persuaders videos.
As part of the S4SD program, Lake Shore’s Marketing and Sales class creates a teen-led traffic safety campaign to educate their fellow classmates about distracted driving, seat belt use, speeding, underage drinking/impaired driving or winter driving. In previous years, our students have taken third and fourth places in the state, resulting in a total of $1,750 for the program in the four years they have participated in the S4SD program.
The Courageous Persuaders competition encourages high school students to create 30-second television commercials on the dangers of drinking and driving and distracted driving. Our Media 1 and Media 2 students have placed in the Top 60 every year, 15+ videos, since they started entering the competition in 2016 and have earned 3 cash prize/scholarships totaling $3,500!
Beyond the foundational knowledge of what constitutes safe driving and conversely, what isn’t, this iteration of ThinkFast Interactive (TFI) heavily emphasizes passenger advocacy and empowerment, encouraging passengers to speak out against driving behaviors that pose a risk to the safety of those in the vehicle and on the roadways. Further, this program reviews the ways in which passengers can be helpful to a driver by minimizing distractions or helping to scan ahead for hazards. In this program, the important, age-relevant topic of pedestrian safety and defensive walking is also a covered topic.
When Principal Dr. Bross was asked why she decided to invite ThinkFast to LSHS, she responded, “This program is a fun, interactive way to help reinforce traffic laws with a heavy emphasis on distracted driving. As keeping kids safe is our number one priority, we couldn’t pass by this opportunity to remind our newest drivers about being safe on the roads."

Tyler Duerksen Wins Masonic Bee
At Masonic Heights Elementary Spelling Bee, mistakes turned into more opportunities to practice and continue to hone their aptitude for spelling.
With correct spelling of the word ogre fifth grader Tyler Duerksen from Masonic Heights was announced the champion of the Tigers Spelling Bee.
Teachers along with supportive parents, worked tirelessly to help participants practice for this competition. Round by round, students took turns spelling words from the official list. They were allowed to have a word repeated, used in a sentence, or defined.
Second and third place runner-ups were Bobby Florek and Veida Schwartz. They misspelled their final words, but chose to not beat themselves up about it. Some students crammed while others studied over time. However, both of these Tigers shared the same philosophy about mistakes: Mistakes will make you try harder next time and get back up again. Wise thoughts from these 5th graders!
One of the best parts of the entire competition was the love passed on by classmates. As spectators in the audience, they crossed their fingers, clapped, and smiled for all contestants from their seats. They wanted everyone to win.
Parent Melissa Florek wrote, "Proud of all of you kiddos! This takes a lot of courage. Seeing all of the high fives and hugs and words of encouragement between the students was truly heartwarming."
Through the support of family and Lake Shore staff, 4 students will be moving on to the Macomb Regional Spelling Bee set for Sunday, March 2nd at 1pm. Who will become the winner from Rodgers Elementary, Violet Elementary and Kennedy Middle School?
NHS Induction Ceremony
The National Honor Society celebrates students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
