Parking Lot Safety
- Students who park on school property must have a parking pass displayed in their front window. Information for obtaining a parking pass can be found on the school website. There are a limited number of student parking passes due to the size of the school parking lot.
- Students who have obtained a parking pass must park in the spaces outlined in white. Faculty parking spaces are outlined in yellow. Students are not permitted to park in the faculty spaces.
- Student parking tags may be suspended or revoked by an administrator if the student is habitually in violation of any school expectations.
- Student drop off and pick up must take place on the athletic side of the building. The main entrance front circle is for bus drop off only. The parking lot near the auditorium is for faculty parking with the rear lot for student parking. It presents a safety concern if parents are dropping students off in those areas.
- Parent and student drivers must adhere to all bus safety regulations. If the bus stop sign is up, then drivers must stop. Drivers and walkers should never weave between parked or moving buses.
Attendance Matters
When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating.
Please refer to the PHS 24-25 Student Handbook for details on the attendance, tardy and early dismissal expectations.
PHS Vision of a Graduate
Ponaganset High School's Vision of a Graduate is a framework that embodies the learner qualities and skills students should possess to be successful in college and careers.
Latin Honor System
Starting with the Class of 2025, Ponganset High School will be moving to a Latin Honor System of recognition for our graduating classes. After gathering input from students, teachers, and community members, this shift will be implemented starting with the 2024-2025 school year. The purpose for recognition through a Latin Honor System is to:
Recognize academic accomplishments of students in a fundamentally more equitable way.
Emphasize growth.
Decrease the level of unhealthy academic competition.
Promote a shift in mindset, moving towards honoring students for meeting an academic standard and not merely competing academically against their peers.
Align with the recognition process used by most colleges and universities to acknowledge student academic achievement.
Encourage students to take classes of interest.
Class rank will not be visible on transcripts or report cards, but will be available to colleges/universities should they request it.
Ponaganset High School will no longer identify a Valedictorian or Salutatorian.
A student’s cumulative weighted grade point average (GPA) after their seventh (7th) semester will be used to determine the level of honors recognition. The following criteria will be used to determine academic recognition:
Summa Cum Laude: 4.43 or higher
Magna Cum Laude: 4.10
Cum Laude: 3.77
Students will be given different colored cords to be worn at graduation. Each cord will symbolize the honor level achieved.
This system correlates to the honor roll criteria:
- Honor roll criteria- Each quarter, an Honor Roll will be published listing the students who have made Highest Honors, High Honors and Honors. Please see the PHS Student Handbook for more information.
- Highest Honors GPA 4.43 or higher
- High Honors GPA 4.10 to 4.43
- Honors GPA 3.77 to 4.0
PHS Earns Silver Recognition on AP School Honor Roll
We are proud to announce that PHS has earned Silver recognition on the College Board's AP School Honor Roll for the 2023-24 school year. This prestigious award recognizes our school's commitment to providing students with access to challenging AP courses and supporting them on their path to college success.
Our students have shared how taking AP courses at PHS has helped them feel more confident and better prepared for college. In fact, some students have been able to graduate college early and save money thanks to the college credits they earned.
We are grateful for the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers, and staff that made this achievement possible. We are committed to continuing to offer our students these valuable opportunities and to providing them with the support they need to succeed.

Foster Old Home Days/ FFA Officer Retreat/ Washington County Fair
It has been exceptionally busy for the Ponaganset FFA Chapter. Members kicked off this season's events with setting up their interactive agriculture activity tent at the Foster Old Home Days (FOHD). The booth is designed for children 1-10 years old and has many different hands-on agriculture stations such as apple picking and egg collecting. FFA members interacted with the children and provided a place for families to relax and have fun for free. Members accumulated over 200 hours of community service. In addition to the agriculture activity tent, many members participated in the Woodsmen Competition while others judged FOHD floral entries and 4-H craft exhibits.
Following FOHD, the officer team participated in a full day officer retreat to prepare for this year's chapter activities and complete team building exercises.
To end the summer's events, students had a jam-packed week preparing, participating, and cleaning up at the Washington County Fair (WCF). Before the fair opened, members set up a landscape design for the FFA state landscape competition. This year's theme was “Harvest Time”. When the fair opened, students participated in various competitions and volunteer opportunities. The chapter members helped the state FFA team open their first agriculture activities barn similar to the one at FOHD. Our members gained additional work-based learning hours supervising the barn on Saturday. Some students even volunteered at the FFA Alumni pie booth to help raise money to support all Rhode Island chapters. Morgan Charette, Ashley Booker, Brooke Sirois, and graduate Eric Burgjohan all participated in the safe tractor driving competition. Eric Burgjohan won first and will be competing at the Eastern States Exposition representing Rhode Island. On Saturday night, about a dozen Ponaganset FFA members participated in the FFA Woodsmen Contest. Senior Benjamin McFee and graduate Eric Burgjohann were named overall champions in the male division. To wrap up the fair season our chapter was invited to set up the landscape design at the Eastern States Exposition.
Memory Project Delivery
For the fourth year, the Art Club and National Art Honor Society students participated in the Memory Project in the spring of 2024.
The Memory Project is a non-profit organization that gives students the opportunity to connect with other children around the world through art.
More About the Memory Project: https://www.memoryproject.org/
Over the summer, the portraits were delivered to the group of students in Malaysia that the PHS art students were paired with for 2024. Many of the children in this group have been orphaned and have struggled to get a good education.
The video below captures the joy on the faces of the students as they receive their original art works. Watching the delivery videos is always a heartwarming moment for our PHS art students as they witness the impact of their efforts.

Guest Speaker: Woody Spring
Mr. Woody Spring (Colonel, USA, Ret.), former NASA astronaut and Ponaganset High School Class of 1963, will be here on Friday, October 11, 2024 during W4 (12:50 PM-2:15 PM) to speak about the career connections he made as a student at Ponaganset, which set him on the path to a career at NASA.
Mr. Spring's bio from the Kennedy Space Center is below:
Sherwood “Woody” Spring received a Bachelor of Science degree in General Engineering from the United States Military Academy in 1967. After graduation, Spring served two tours of duty in Vietnam. The first was from 1968 to 1969 with the 101st Airborne Division. The second tour, 1970-1971, came immediately after flight school and was served as a helicopter pilot with the 1st Cavalry Division. He then earned a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Arizona in 1974 and graduated from the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School in 1976.
Mr. Spring was selected as an astronaut in May 1980. Spring served as a mission specialist on STS-61B in 1985 when he was responsible for launching three communications satellites and performed two extravehicular activities (EVAs). The EVAs, totaling more than 12 hours, investigated space station construction techniques, large structure manipulation while on the end of the remote arm and a time and motion study for comparison between Earth training and space performance. With the completion of STS-61B he logged a total of 165 hours in space.
He was on the Tiger Team for the Challenger accident, which occurred six weeks after his own flight. Following the Challenger accident, Mr. Spring was selected to lead the Army’s Space Program Office. He attended the Defense Systems Acquisition Management Program, and then managed a classified program that brings National Satellite based intelligence directly to the battlefield.
Spring retired from NASA in August 1988, earning many awards and medals throughout his career.
