First Day of School This Wednesday!
School begins this Wednesday, August 14th at 8 am! If you have missed any of the previous Citizens Connection newsletters, please be sure to review them prior to the first day of school for important information. If you have additional questions, please review the Family Dashboard or ask them at Meet the Teacher tonight. Any remaining questions can be directed to your child's teacher(s), email info@cwckansascity.org, or call 816-499-8000.
Meet the Teacher Tonight!
Tonight is Meet the Teacher from 5:30-7 pm! Families will check in with staff at the tables located at the back door, which is the parking lot entrance of the school, and receive their elementary teacher assignments and middle school schedules. After receiving these, families are invited to:
- Receive elementary teacher assignments and middle school schedules.
- Meet both classroom and specials/electives teachers.
- Drop off school supplies in your homeroom classroom.
- Browse items from the uniform closet.
- Drop off medications and medical paperwork with the nurse.
- Get needed vaccinations on site from KC Health (more info below).
- Speak with Camp Fire about their after-school program.
- Fill out this year's Free & Reduced Lunch application, which we request all families complete.
- Ask questions!
Please be prepared to let your teacher know how your student(s) will dismiss when school ends every day: Walk-up, car rider, or Camp Fire.
Tendremos un intérprete de español disponible para el día de orientación para familias nuevas y el día para conocer al maestro. Usted puede enviar un mensaje a Ivette De La Paz al número 816.804.2529 si tiene alguna pregunta en algún momento.
Campus Prep Volunteering Today
Please consider coming to help make some final preparations to our campus today from 2pm-5pm!
Reach out to our Facilities Manager, Blake Smith, if you have any questions.
Spirit Wear Bundles For Sale
This year we will again be offering a bundle of three t-shirts and a zipped hoodie! These items, offered in both youth and adult sizes for $55 per bundle, are available for purchase through the CWC Merch Store for students, caregivers, and staff and can be worn as uniform pieces. Bundle orders will close on August 20th and will be sent home with students in mid-September.
You can find more information about uniforms by visiting the Uniforms page of the website.
Volunteering at Citizens
If you are hoping to volunteer at Citizens during the school day, whether it is as a chaperone, as a tutor in the classroom, or in other capacities around the school building, now is a great time to complete your background checks! Processing times can be as long as 2-3 weeks, and we want you to be prepared to jump in and help without waiting for your clearances later in the year.
Visit www.cwckansascity.org/volunteer (also available through the Family Dashboard) to get more information about these processes and to see a list of current volunteer opportunities.
If you have previously completed these screenings for Citizens, you do not need to do them again!
Please reach out to Mr. Smith at blake.smith@cwckansascity.org with any questions regarding background checks and volunteer opportunities.
Weekly Office Volunteer Needed
Are you looking for an opportunity to volunteer regularly at the school? We're looking for a volunteer who can come in for a few hours every week to make copies, laminate, and cut a variety of items for teachers.
Because this volunteer will be working without the supervision of a staff member during the school day, they will need to have both the FCSR screening and MACHS fingerprint and background check. This opportunity doesn't have a specific day or time set in stone, so it is up to you to decide what recurring time works best with your schedule!
If you have any prior experience working with laminators or commercial printers - or are willing to learn - please reach out to Mr. Blake Smith at blake.smith@cwckansascity.org about volunteering your time at the school!
Drop Off & Pick Up Reminders
Please take a few minutes before the first day of school to review the drop off and pick up procedures.
A few additional reminders:
- When parking along Broadway, please do not block the bus stop, fire hydrant, or handicapped parking.
- Before-school care begins at 7 am, and there is no cost to drop your child off for breakfast between 7-7:45 am. Please walk them inside to the lobby and sign them in at the front desk.
- In order to keep traffic moving on Broadway, please use the carpool line to drop off all students between 7:45-8:00 am. 5th through 8th graders can then walk around to enter through the front door.
- Students not registered for Camp Fire must be picked up no later than 3:45 pm.
After-School Clubs Proposal
Help us provide some fun after-school club opportunities for our students this fall! We are still looking for reliable, trusted adults to share their hobbies and passions with our students. Please consider signing up to teach a club or share this information with others in the community!
Clubs, which will begin in mid-September, meet after school once a week for ten weeks on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays until 5 pm. Sponsors are paid $600 at the end of the semester for attending a sponsor orientation and then teaching ten weeks of clubs.
If you would like to be a club sponsor, please fill out this club proposal form as soon as possible!
Early Release Wednesdays Begin August 21st
Dismissal will take place at 1:50 pm every Wednesday beginning Wednesday, August 21st. Childcare will be available until 3:30 for those students not enrolled in the after-school program if their caregivers are not able to pick up at 1:50 pm. Camp Fire students will attend Camp Fire programming beginning at 1:50 pm on Early Release Wednesdays and may be picked up as late as 6 pm, as on other days.
Please note that although August 14th is a Wednesday, we will not dismiss until 3:30 pm on the first day.
