Happy School Principals' Day!
On Wednesday, May 1st, we celebrated Ms. McKay in honor of Principal Appreciation Day! Students lined the halls with flowers and smiles and each and every one greeted Ms. McKay to tell her how important she is to them and to our school community. We are all so lucky to have you as our leader, example, helper, friend, co-worker, teacher and principal. We love you Ms. McKay!
Lines from the Library
Dike Newell students have been learning all about STEAM in the Library Fairy Tale STEAM Club. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, all valuable skills to prepare students for future careers. As we have recently been studying fairy tales it was a perfect combination.
For science, kindergarten read nonfiction books about bears, pigs and goats as "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," "The Three Little Pigs" and "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" were recently read in class. For technology they programmed the Bee-Bot robots to move to different letters to spell out fairy tale words. For engineering they made castles with the castle blocks and the house for the three little pigs with Legos. They also used special kits from Lakeshore Learning to assemble chairs for Goldilocks and the three bears, a bridge for the three billy goats gruff (the bridge had to be strong enough to hold all three goats as well as tall enough for the troll to stand underneath) and a house for the three pigs that could not be blown down. Art and math were combined with a coloring activity that involved searching for numbers on nursery rhyme characters.
First and second grade students recently read "The Frog Prince." Science, technology and math were combined in a Bee-Bot programming challenge.
Using the book "The World's Biggest Amphibians" by Mari Schuh, students answered science questions and used their numerical answers to move the Bee-Bots around the number board. For engineering, Legos built the well from "The Frog Prince" story. The Lakeshore Learning sets and castle blocks were used for the same activities as kindergarten. For art there was a coloring activity where students colored various scenes from "The Frog Prince" and then cut them out and put them in order. There were also popsicle stick puppets to assemble from "The Three Little Pigs." Additionally, all grades also used a flannel board and character kits to act out familiar fairy tales, giving them a chance to explore the dramatic arts.
