Project/Problem Based Learning 101s Begin

All certified teachers and staff in Burkburnett ISD will be trained in Project Based Learning over the next year. Because of the generosity of a Department of Defense grant, BISD is able to provide this training through the Buck Institute for Education (BIE). Certified staff were given choices about when to complete the 3-day PBL 101 training.


For those who complete their training in June, July, or August of 2017, the school year will end on May 25, 2018 with May 29, 30, and 31 as Opt-Out Days. Some certified staff have chosen to take PBL 101 during May 29-31, 2018. Regardless of when you take it, this is an exciting time to be part of the BISD Team!


The PD Committee, with representatives from every campus, were trained in a Visioning Day exercise with the Buck Institute. Then the BISD Administrative Team underwent two days of Implementation Planning. A District Leadership Team for PBL has been formed with representation from each campus and will undergo three days of District Leadership training with BIE at the end of May.

Opt-Out Days for 2017-2018

You will see in the 2017-2018 District Calendar above, you have up to five Opt-Out opportunities.


  1. Nov. 20, 2017: Complete online SafeSchools training to get this day off. You will receive an email in June when SafeSchools training opens.
  2. May 25, 2018: Complete any 6-hour training on your own for this opt-out opportunity. Training must be done outside of regular school hours, must have a certificate showing at least 6 hours of credit, and you cannot have received a stipend for the credit. Examples of eligible credit might be a Region 9 training in the summer or the Google Educator Level 1 Certification completed online. Please remember to turn in certificates to the Curriculum Office.
  3. May 29-31, 2018: If you complete PBL 101 training before May, you can opt-out of these three days.

PBL Leadership Team Development #269865

The PBL Leadership Team Development Series equips instructional leaders with the skills and knowledge needed to create the systemic conditions necessary for successful and sustainable PBL implementation. This series is a required feature of BIE's three-year implementation plan. Workshop participants should include district leadership, instructional coaches, department chairs, site leadership and teacher leaders. The 8-day series, usually spread over the course of one year, includes modules on key protocols, collegial conversations, analysis of student work, walkthroughs, data analysis, etc. (Only District PBL Leadership member should attend). The PBL 101 Workshop is BIE's foundational three-day (consecutive) onsite workshop. Based on BIE's model for Gold Standard PBL, the workshop provides participants with the skills and knowledge needed to design, assess, and manage a rigorous, relevant, and standards-based project. The workshop models the project process. Facilitated by one of BIE's expert National Faculty, the workshop is a balanced blend of direct instruction, video analysis, hands-on work, resource sharing, and peer collaboration and feedback.
