January 28th Half-Day
January 28th is an early dismissal day and students will be dismissed at 11:30. For this day, and all early release days moving forward, ALL student walkers must have a signed note from their parent in order to walk to town. This also includes students that walk or ride a bike on a daily basis. Students that walk or ride on all other days will not be required to have a note.
Students are to bring their signed note to the main office, we will then issue them a "walkers" pass. No student will be permitted to make arrangements the day of the early release, all signed notes permitting your child to walk to town must be received by the front office by the end of the day January 27th. No student will be permitted to walk without acquiring a "walkers" pass from the front office.
Thank you for your help with this,
NMS
These new protocols are in response to the the email I shared with you in November. See below:
Principal Long,
Good afternoon, and Happy Thanksgiving Holiday! I wanted to send this email to you, in the hopes that we can finally put these constant issues to rest. Something needs to be done about these students, in regard to shorter days and the like. Yesterday, and now today, the kids from your school have come over to the Village at Newtown shopping center and proceed to treat it like their own personal playground. They argue with all forms of authority, and ultimately treat my center, as well as its tenants, with utter disrespect. I understand that in today’s modern times, once the kids leave the school, they are no longer under the school’s care; However, I urge you to still reach out to the parents of your student body, to help them understand what their children are doing as soon as they leave school on shorter days. I am asking you for this, as I am trying to run a shopping center during the busy holiday season, and cannot continue wasting the polices’ resources, in chasing the kids away. I understand that they’re just happy to get out early, and with winter vacation coming up, it can exacerbate those emotions; I am only asking for your help in reigning these kids in, before one of them gets hurt. Again, it being the holiday season, traffic is increased, and with the kids all running around, into the street and all over the parking lots, someone will get hurt, and I am just hoping that we can work together to prevent this. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me or email me, and we can further discuss any options. Thank you for your time, and again, Happy Thanksgiving!
Regards,

Dear Parents and Guardians:
The counseling department at NMS has partnered with “JFCS” to provide additional support for our students. The facilitators will run a group entitled “Cope and Thrive” which focuses on helping students manage anxiety, stress, and depression by teaching them strategies for success (see attached flyer).
The groups will start in February and occur on Thursdays (8 weeks for 45 minutes). The staff are trained and have their child abuse and criminal background checks. If needed, they will also consult with the NMS counseling team.
Support groups offer young people an opportunity to share feelings and concerns with peers who often have similar feelings and life experiences. If your child is interested, please complete the form, and return by January 17th to the Counseling Department. Students are responsible for any missed schoolwork.
If you would like your child to receive extra support please utilize the attached permission form below. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s counselor:
