Addressing our #1 Behavior Concern
A recent review of our behavior data indicates that the most frequent issue we're addressing is students being "Missing in Action" (MIA). MIA is defined as being more than five minutes late to class or leaving class and being gone for more than five minutes without permission. In a 40-minute class period, this disrupts learning and impacts academic progress. We are committed to supporting students in getting to class on time and staying engaged in the learning environment.
To address MIA incidents, we have implemented a new tiered approach. The first incident will result in a warning, a discussion with the student, and completion of a Class Attendance Reflection Sheet. A second incident will result in an administrative detention before or after school. A third incident will require a parent conference to develop an individualized intervention plan. A fourth incident will result in Saturday School.
We will contact families at each step along the way, so that no one is blind-sided. Your partnership with us is critical to ensuring students arrive on time and engage in their full class period. The data suggest this is a needed culture shift among our students and we appreciate your support in making it happen.
We will review this new process with students through Commodore Time. We believe that through consistent communication and support, we can help all students succeed.
