Principal's Message - Ms. Kanika A. Burks
Take a moment to reflect on the quotes below:
" Technology is a just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important." ~Bill Gates
"Teachers who inspire realize there will always be rocks in the road ahead of us. They will be stumbling blocks or stepping stones. It all depends on how you use them. ~Unknown
"When you see something beautiful in a student, let them know. It may take a second to say, but for them it could last a lifetime. ~ Robert John Meehan
"What all good teachers have in common; however, is that they set high standards for their students and do not settle for anything less." ~Marva Collins
"Teach in the ways a child learns, don't force a child to learn in the way we teach." ~Unknown
Which one resonates with you the most? Why? How will you use these quotes to motivate you during this five day week?
As you listen to the song below, imagine the voices of your scholars singing the words to you!
All of you are doing a GOOD JOB and don't you for one second doubt it!
"You’re the engine that makes all things go
And you’re always in disguise, my hero."
~Lyrics from Good Job by Alicia Keys

Special Education Dean - Ms. Carie Imme
Happy Sunday!
We are almost a month into school and based on the classrooms that I observed this previous week, I can tell classroom cultures, RAPS, and relationships are not only established, but fine tuned to be working for everyone involved.
SHOUTOUT to Ms. Carson, Dr. Mbalia, and Mr. Riley for demonstrating what a fine tuned classroom looks like. Through instant, positive feedback, proposing questions in the chat, and checking for understanding in various ways, (asking questions, making predictions, creating guided notes) this team engaged their scholars in a number of ways to accommodate the needs of ALL their scholars. Despite having been the first week of implementing Wit&Wisdom, they are eagerly moving into the next step to establish a co-teaching dynamic to better support their scholars. Thank you for taking the initiative on this right away!
SHOUTOUT to Ms. Jensen, Ms. Armstrong, Mr. Cullen, and Ms. J. Williams on completing our campus’ first IEP of the year! It was a HUGE adjustment for this scholar and many changes needed to be made/discussed, but that didn’t stop them from working as a team to provide the best support possible for this scholar!
Check THIS out this Week
Subscribe to “Calmed by Nature” on YouTube. They offer a wide range of calming sceneries and audio (lofi hiphop chill beats in the city, rainy day in a coffee shop, campfire on the beach, etc.) you can play while waiting for scholars to enter your classroom, play in the background during independent work, or to offer a calming ambience in the background for yourself while working.
New Scholars to MCP
Please forward any information to me regarding incoming scholars who have a 504 plan or IEP
While I have received most information on our new scholars, I am still finding families who are reaching out to homeroom teachers indicating their child has a 504 plan or IEP
I need this information ASAP--thank you to those who have already shared this with me!
Thank you to everyone who added me as a co-teacher in their google classroom in a timely manner last week; it is greatly appreciated! I look forward to popping into more classrooms throughout the coming weeks.

Resources
Found this on Facebook and thought it was an awesome resource
“Just wanted to share the 52 libraries with copyright permissions again for anyone who has not seen it. This was truly a labor of love. I received permissions to share these stories from YouTube channels who received copyright permissions from publishers. If your district cares about copyright or you really like to honor copyright, these books are all copyright approved! (NO fair use claims, only actual copyright approval!)
You may not take these libraries/books and sell on TpT. That could get you into very big trouble with copyright anyway. “ This was copied from the actual post from Casey Verdugo

Reminers
PRIDES have begun!!! From the feedback thus far, attendance is the big issue! We will have to end PRIDE groups at 8:55 and instruct scholars to log back into homerooms for attendance. If you have any suggestions on how this will work any better, your ideas are welcomed!!
Just a reminder, at no point do we cancel classes or dismiss class more than five minutes early. We consistently teach from day one! (Education and Success are our scholars Birthright!!)
This week we have had a couple of situations where scholars are joining other classes, not attending classes, and using inappropriate language online. Please continue to sweat the small stuff and hold scholars accountable. Follow the correct protocol, stay in consistent communication with parents, and do not forget to complete the scholar contact log. Teachers that have experienced this have done a wonderful job of informing myself, meeting with scholars, and having parent conversations! (Way to build meaningful relationships and hold high expectations!!!)
In the spirit of heroes, on Friday, all four campuses will be commemorating the life and legacy of Chadwick Boseman by having a spirit day. Scholars can acknowledge the superheroes within themselves and wear something to express it. In addition, we are also have our first Virtual Lit Friday!!!! The criteria is…. scholars that have maintained 85% of their virtuous dollars and have 90% attendance in classes. I will run the reports and inform you on Thursday who those scholars are. I will also post the list on my google classroom. So please inform scholars that the incentive is near!!!! More details will come this week...

HS Parent nights are being scheduled before the high school fair, which is at the beginning of October. Specific dates will be coming out by next week.

Mr. Johnson for taking over science class and bringing in real life connections to the concepts!
Mr. Hayes for taking over math class seamlessly!!
Let's Take on this Five Day Week like the Heroes that WE ARE!!
Chief Culture Officer Corner - Ms. Trila Pitchford
“Rules without relationships inspire rebellion”. ~ Josh McDowell
Pitchford's Culture Corner 9.14.20
Think about if any of these questions have ever crossed your mind or if you have asked a colleague one of these questions. Why won’t that scholar listen to me? Why won’t they turn their camera on? Who does that scholar think he is? Why is she so disrespectful?
In the book, Hacking School Discipline, by Nathan Maynard and Brad Weinstein, 9 “hacks” are outlined to create a culture of empathy and responsibility using restorative justice. Hack 1 discusses how to create a culture of communication to resolve conflict. When scholars are not given a voice when a situation arises, we are indicating that their voice does not matter and that the situation can be resolved by giving out a punitive punishment. Does that solve the problem? It’s more like putting a bandage on a wound that requires surgery. The scholar has only learned that the behavior will result in a punishment. The whole story is never revealed nor are the reasons for the behavior ever uncovered. We need to hear what the scholar is trying to say through their behavior and use that as our guide to redirect them. To do this, we must build relationships with our scholars, develop our classroom culture and climate and give scholars a voice.
Before assigning a consequence for a behavior, we must seek first to understand and then move toward restorative mediation. Here’s a list of questions to ask a scholar to better understand their behavior:
1. Identify the behavior you need to talk to the scholar about.
3. Ask the following questions to learn more about the behavior and why it happened
- What were you doing? or What happened?
- What were you thinking about when _____ happened?
- Who was affected by your action and how?
Once you understand more about the behavior, you can move toward the restorative mediation, where the goal is to create a resolution that addresses the situation directly. As scholars’s voices are heard, relationships will grow, which in turn will increase on task student outcomes in your class!
We are in this together! We are here to support you in this journey of creating a culturally safe, equitable classroom environment, conducive to rigorous learning for all scholars.
Take Care of Yourself!
