Letter from the Principal
Happy Halloween!
It was so fun to see all the costumes today and the energy in the air. The wet blacktop made it a bit more challenging but we pulled it off. Thank you to all the parents who came out to watch our parade. I hope you are all safe tonight as you go Trick or Treating. Tomorrow is still a school day, so have fun but be ready to learn tomorrow and please be on time to school.
Next week is the Book Fair in the Multi with a Family Night event on Wednesday. It is a great time to start thinking about those holiday presents. Hope to see you all there!!
As the holidays approach, many families choose to leave early or stay longer than the days we have off of school. Please be sure to fill out an ISP (see the top of the ROAR for the form to fill out) or even better, please wait until school is out and be back on time.
Truancy and Tardies:
This year, as a district, we are looking at Truancy more closely. This includes excused and unexcused absences and tardies. I am happy to say that our truancy rates are down this year from past years but there are still too many students who have already missed over 10% of the school year. If this is the case you will be receiving or may have already received a Truancy letter. This letter is the first step in reminding you of how many days your student has missed and the importance of being at school. The next steps will be a meeting to discuss how to help you and your student get to school each day.
This goes for Tardies as well. Some students are late most days of the week or sometimes even every Monday. When a student comes late to school, not only are they disrupting the flow of the class and the morning, they are walking into a lesson or community building circle and now need to catch up which often causes stress to them, the teacher and others around them. Have you ever woken up late, rushed around to get out the door and then your whole day just feels a little bit off, this is what it is like for your students when they are tardy.
If you would like help or ideas on strategies to make it to school on time here are some great articles with wonderful tips.
Thank you for all you are doing to help your student have the best school year yet!

PTA News
Thank you to everyone who came out and joined us for Trunk or Treat! We had such a great turn out and there were some fabulously decorated trunks! Thank you to all the families that passed out treats and to everyone who volunteered! And a massive thank you to Shirit Rosenberg and Elif Kimyacioglu - our PTA VPs of Non-Revenue – for making it all happen! We had a blast kicking off Halloween weekend with you all!
Then…the next big event is the always popular Book Fair! The Loyola Book Fair will be on campus in the multi-purpose room, Nov. 5-7. There will be a family night on Wednesday, November 6, 5-7:30pm with guest reader, Mrs. Rafferty, and a special visit from The Wish Library author, Christine Evans. More details HERE.
Also, our next PTA general meeting is on Wednesday, November 13 at 7pm via Google Meet. Come hear about what is going on around campus and upcoming events! GoogleMeet information will be circulated soon.
And, last but certainly not least, SAVE THE DATE for the Loyola Auction – February 8, 2025, 5-10PM!! The Auction is a beloved tradition - an adult only gathering where we come together, mingle with friends (old and new) and fundraise for our kids and the Loyola community. Be on the lookout for more communications, but please reach out to Auction Co-Chairs (Stefanie Shanks or Liz Hwang) at loyola.auction@gmail.com if you have any questions or want to get involved.
Have a fun and safe Halloween tonight!

SPRING PLAY: THE WIZARD OF OZ
The Loyola PTA is pleased to announce this year’s musical, The Wizard of Oz! Follow the yellow brick road to learn more! If your student is in the third through sixth grade at Loyola and is interested in performing, please plan to sign up through the process described below. The program will run for about 3 months with performances on Thursday, March 27 – Sunday, March 30.
The first step is to sign up for the musical. Sign-ups will become available via e-mail at 8pm on Thursday, November 7. Sign-ups fill up very quickly (last year the sign-up slots were full within 30 minutes), so if your child is very interested, please mark your calendars and watch your emails for the link to sign up.
If interest exceeds the number of spots available, priority will be given to 6th grade students and children with parents in lead volunteer roles, followed by students in the order they sign up. Once your child is confirmed for participation in the musical, your child must submit an initial audition to determine their role in the cast. Note that every child who auditions will have a role. The audition must be submitted via recorded video by end of day on Friday, November 22, 2024 meaning that your child will record and submit an audition video with a 30 to 60 second song and 30 to 60 second memorized monologue or poem. Select cast members may be called back in person in the Multipurpose Room at Loyola on Saturday, December 7 from 10:30-1:30pm to do some additional read-throughs to finalize roles.
The entire cast will have a readthrough on Wednesday, December 18 from 3:15-4:45pm. Regular rehearsals beginThursday, January 9, 2025 and will continue on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15pm - 4:45pm and Thursdays from 2pm - 3:45pm. There are also few Saturday rehearsals. The full schedule and more information about auditions is at our website: https://sites.google.com/view/loyola-woz.
We need your help! Please remember that this is an active after school experience where it is critical that the kids have an interest in being involved and parents must be willing to volunteer time to help. These productions are not possible without the participation of all parents who have children in the play. There will be a variety of volunteer activities available to fit your parental interests and we ask for at least 15 hours of volunteer time for each child in the production as well as involvement from all parents for rehearsal supervision. This is a great activity to help build your Loyola community while sharing a wonderful experience with your child/children. We are looking for several parents to take on lead volunteer roles, including one or two parents to shadow us this year so they can lead the production next year (descriptions of roles/responsibilities can be found at the musical website).
Finally, if your 5th or 6th grade child is interested in being part of the musical but does not want to perform on stage, there may be opportunities to assist in working backstage, helping with lights and props, selling tickets at the show and in other ways. Please email us at loyolaplay@gmail.com with these student names.
The cost of participation is $350 per child and $300 for each additional child. (If this is a hardship, please let the drama chairs know at loyolaplay@gmail.com). We plan to hire a teacher, former teacher or future teacher to help supervise each rehearsal, along with a volunteer parent, and have thus increased participation fees to pay for this supervision.
Thank you,
Thuy Fritsch and Carrie Williamson

Family Giving Tree, Loyola Cub Scout Pack 33
The Loyola Cub Scout Pack 33 is excited to announce that we are once again leading a Holiday Wish Drive for the Family Giving Tree. The scouts will be setting up the annual holiday tree in front of the office this week with gift wish tags. Parents can take a tag which contains the name, age, and wish of a most deserving individual in the Bay Area. Families can then shop for an item from the wish list, tape the tag to the unwrapped gift, and return it back to the front office collection box.
Please join us in making the holidays a little brighter for our Bay Area community!
How are LASD schools funded, and why do we need to raise money each school year?
It’s complicated! Many sources come together to keep our schools strong: property taxes, parcel taxes, bonds, and support from organizations like LAEF and school PTAs.
The Citizens Advisory Committee for Finance - CACF, is a strong oversight body that monitors long-term LASD finances, including parcel tax expenditures. They recently came to an LAEF board meeting to educate representatives from all 9 LASD schools about how it all comes together to fund our excellent schools. Here’s a recording and the slide deck of the presentation: The ABCs of LASD Finance.
LAEF is helping fund teachers and staff this school year. Have a look at our annual grant to see how your donations are being spent. Learn more about the process of how we decide what to fund each school year. If you have yet to give for 2024-25, donate to LAEF today.
Library Corner
This week we are featuring Mr. Steinberg's favorite book, Where The Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak.
See how our storybook pumpkin patch has grown in the last week!
Your child will receive a small prize when they pick up their pumpkin. Please stop by the library by 3:30 pm this Friday 11/1. All pumpkins that are not picked up will be disposed of. Thank you for your participation!
