The Buzz at Westbrook
January 31, 2020
From the Principal...
Dear Westbrook Families,
Online enrollment for kindergarten is now open! We will have in-person enrollment on Friday, February 14, 2020 between the hours of 8:00 AM-3:00 PM - or - Tuesday, February 18, 2020 between the hours of 4:30 PM-6:30 PM. Spread the word! We look forward to seeing many familiar faces and meeting new Westbrook families! More information about the enrollment process for Kindergarten can be on our school website.
Leapin’ Into Literature
The Westbrook PTO is still in need of volunteer readers to sign up to read to first graders during one or more of their recess times in the month of February. This is a fun and relatively short volunteer experience, and the students just love to hear guest readers share some of the latest and greatest books, which are then donated by the PTO to the Westbrook LRC collection. Please take a moment to click this LINK to see if you might be available to help. Please contact Caroline McKevitt (caroline.e.mckevitt@gmail.com) or Michele Szalczynski (mszalczynski@yahoo.com), the Leapin’ into Literature chairpersons, with any questions.
STEAM Night
Mark your calendars! We are excited to offer a special STEAM Night for Westbrook Families on Thursday, March 12. (STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.) Your entire family is welcome to attend! See the flyer below for more information. Please RSVP here by February 20!

Parenting Resources
We love our littles ones more than anything in this world, and yet moments of frustration, stress, and “BIG” emotions can result in overwhelming situations. I wanted to share a free webinar with you from the Conscious Discipline website. As a staff, we have been studying Conscious Discipline this year for our professional book study. Click here to access a lesson about how to manage our composure in order to provide healthy, self-regulatory experiences at home by Conscious Discipline Certified Instructor and mother of two, Nicole Mercer. It is less than 30-minutes long and full of practical ideas.
Another resource for you comes from Technical Assistance Center on Social Emotional Intervention for Young Children (TACSEI). This resource offers suggestions for helping your child to avoid meltdowns. Click here to access the link.

Help Us Keep Our School Healthy
Please do not send your student to school for 24 hours if they have had a fever of 100 degrees or higher, and/or an episode of vomiting, or diarrhea. Your child may be feeling better, but they are still contagious and can expose other children and staff to their illness.
To return to school, a child must be:
Fever free (without fever reducing medication) for at least 24 hours
Diarrhea free for at least 24 hours
Vomit free for at least 24 hours
Please do not give your child a medication to treat the fever and send them to school. The medicine may cause the child's temperature to be normal, but the child is still contagious with the illness that caused the fever. Also, your child is more susceptible to contracting another illness when their immune system is already fighting the current illness.
Together let’s keep our school healthy!
