RPS Midsummer
August 2024
Dear RPS Community,
As I write this mid-summer letter, I am reminded of how quickly time goes by- it feels like we just wrapped up the school year with one of our newer traditions, “End of Year Convocation.” This short program, dedicated to faculty, inspired us through the words of our student guests (you can see a short clip here). The special morning event was a reminder of the impact of relationships and culture on a community. The primary purpose was to reflect, honor, and celebrate the accomplishments of the school year, and anchor us in our purpose which is always our students. And just like that, we transitioned to summer, and the planning for a new school year!
I find great joy in highlighting the work that has been happening here at RPS during the summer, while also sharing the Central Office team’s personal moments of the summer. As our returning community members know, summers at RPS are incredibly busy; and yet the time away from the school-day routine provides opportunities to collaborate and process differently. We have plenty of summer left, and look forward to hearing from our faculty and students about all of their adventures since our last days together.
Earlier this year my three children were sitting at the kitchen island when one of them asked, “Mommy, is this what you pictured your life to be?” After a brief pause, I responded by saying, “I pictured my life pulling the three of you in the little red wagon.”
Summertime also allows for reading and new learning. I just wrapped up reading Never Enough by Jennifer Wallace. Having worked in high-performing school districts for most of my career, the challenges described in the book resonated with the realities I observed over the past few years for communities and families. The book is worth a read and certainly demonstrates the need for a collective vision in how we (as adults) respond to the growing pressures of achievement. While reading, I was also reminded of the importance of our words and actions not only with children but also with adults- an important message that resonated…. What can we do and say to ensure that others know they matter and are enough?
The idea of a collective vision drives the work that we do at RPS. During the summer, we begin to memorialize the District Priorities for the upcoming school year. A natural theme began to emerge that you will hear about when we kickoff the start of school-the importance of being “all in.” Our first few Board of Education meetings will be focused on our priorities, and what the community can expect from the work of RPS.
No one loves a theme more than our Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction! Cory Gillette has been hard at work with Forever Summer Bridge, curriculum writing, and connecting all of the dots for our opening days. When she isn't working, you can find Cory boating and enjoying the waterfront. She also traveled with her family to Westport, Massachusetts. She claims Westport Sea Farms has the best oysters in the world!
Our Assistant Superintendent of Special Services, Dr. Liz Hannaway and her family have been swimming, swimming, swimming all summer! The dog days of summer have been more than welcome for the Hannaways. Whether it be water parks, lake swimming, weekends at the town pool, or just sprinkler and slip-and-slide fun in the backyard, they can’t get enough time in the water. Liz and her family enjoyed a week at Woodloch Pines in PA where her children loved riding go-karts, boating on the lake, the arcade, and a myriad of other fun stuff. Liz needed a vacation from her vacation when she got back! In addition to activities with her boys, Liz made time to hang out with friends and family; she is very lucky to have many who live nearby.
A bit of relaxing time on the beach in Delaware is what our Director of Personnel, Karen Dewing needed after a busy hiring season. Karen was joined by her husband, daughter, and their two dogs. She enjoyed reading The Women, by Kristin Hannah. The weather was perfect; and while, for the most part, Karen was able to relax, she still managed to hop on a district meeting or two. As you know, this team is dedicated!
Our Director of Finance, Jill Browne, visited some friends in the midwest in June, and couldn’t get enough of her 2-year old grandson throughout the summer months! Plenty of weekend time was spent at her favorite lake with family and friends. Her middle son finished his first year in medical school; and her daughter finished her first year teaching middle school science. Jill has already started building the 2025-26 budget and is fully recharged for another exciting year at RPS!
In addition to fresh paint, new equipment, and safety and security updates, the RPS community can expect many facility projects across our schools. A few highlights include new playgrounds at Barlow Mountain and Ridgebury elementary schools (and the start of a new playground at Scotland). Veterans Park Elementary will be brighter with new LED lighting throughout the school. While there are far too many building projects to list, the Town has also been busy. One special project is their installation of the solar canopy at RHS. Have you seen it? Very cool!
We were “all in” with our amazing student-focused summer programs- Extended School Year (ESY), Best Buddies, and Forever Summer Bridge were huge hits- here is one piece of parent feedback:
“ I just wanted to send an email about the Jumpstart to Kindergarten program. As a colleague and parent, I have been more than impressed with everyone involved in the program. My daughter was extremely anxious the first day of the program, however, she happily skipped out of the car every day after, for the past two weeks. Thanks to Bridge, she literally does not stop talking about how excited she is for Kindergarten. Mrs. Ippoliti and Mr. Dunne absolutely crushed it with their leadership of the program. Mr. Luchsinger and all of the amazing staff at drop-off and pick-up have helped make everything run effortlessly. In addition, the Kindergarten and specials’ teachers have made a positive and lasting impact on our little ones. I am excited for another successful week next week and look forward to sending my son to the same program next summer. Thank you for creating a program for these rising kindergarteners. It is 100% preparing them for school.”As you can see, the RPS leadership is “all in”. We would like to give a huge shout-out to our ESY leaders- Dr. Showah, Mrs. Gurry, and Ms. Collins, as well as our Forever Summer Bridge leadership- Ms. DeSantis, Mr. Dunne, Ms. Ippoliti, Mrs. Granger, and Mr. Luchsinger who supported our students with a truly rich and meaningful experience. All of these programs promote relationships and connections, creativity and shared learning, and inclusivity. For those parents who are curious in learning more, see here for information about our summer Best Buddies program, which was another fantastic success in 2024.
