Principal Update
A big thank you to all those families who have now completed the Whānau Inventory. We now have 74 responses. We have around 250 families in the school, so we are leaving this open for one final week in case you have missed it. One of our annual plan goals is that “Whānau know that their involvement is valued and encouraged” and the information you provide in the inventory is the first step towards this - we know how much you wish to be involved and in what way.
Paid Union Meetings - Thursday 4 April
Please see the section below outlining the upcoming Paid Union Meetings for teachers and our approach to keep disruption to classroom programmes to a minimum.
We ask that you complete the form to let us know your intentions as soon as possible.
Advance Notice - Annual Whole School Emergency Evacuation & Reunification Practise 2024
The Board has set the date for our Annual Whole School Evacuation Practise for Friday 20 September.
This is an important practise as we work though the considerations of notifying families and safely evacuating close to 300 students as we would need to in a civil defence emergency. We appreciate our families patience and understanding with this as we understand that it is an interruption to the working day and requires some forward planning. As with every year, more information will come out closer to the time, but for now please:
Mark the 20 September in your diary
Check that your emergency contact records are up to date with the office if these have changed since last year.
Strategic Plan 2024 - 2025
Thank you for your engagement with us leading up to the development of our Strategic Plan and Action Implementation Plan for 2024 - 2025. This has now been published to our Bellevue Website and can be found on the Our People - Bellevue Board page under Board Reports or HERE.
The next step is the development of an annual plan informed by the 2024 outcomes and our school priorities. This outlines the actions our team will take towards achieving each outcome, who is leading this work and the measures we will use to monitor our progress over the year. The Board is informed on our progress towards the identified outcomes regularly as part of the monthly Principal’s report to the Board.
Our 2024 Annual Plan is currently being finalised and will also be shared through this newsletter once ready.
We are focused on making our guiding documents as accessible as possible to our community. If you have any feedback on how we can do this better, please get in touch.
Whakawhanaungatanga Fridays
These three weekly events are back on track again for 2024 and it was great to hear that we had some whānau attendance last Friday. The focus for last week was Te Tiriti and Māori Culture (a reminder that we are utilising this opportunity to delve into key cultural events during the year with our students).
Some of the activities included STEM - make your own frisbee, Health & PE - poi toa and poi rakau traditional Māori games, Visual Art - mask making and resist painting, Music - Create your own musical instruments, Play - building a waka. As usual a huge amount of fun and learning was had by all.
School Donations for 2024
Our school donations have remained the same for more than 15 years.
With the rising costs of everything required to run a school, this is no longer sustainable. This year the Board has, after careful consideration, decided to increase the school donation figure to more closely align with schools of similar size in our Newlands - Paparangi local community.
The Bellevue School donation is now set at $140 per year for the first child in a family, and $220 for two or more. Payment of the donation is voluntary and parents can claim an income tax credit from Inland Revenue.
A request for the amount is sent to each family every term.
Student activity payments remain the same as in 2023. The below is an excerpt from our School Docs policy for your information.
Activity payments are required to cover the costs of optional equipment, experiences, and services that are extra to the school’s curriculum obligations. This payment is set at $15 per pupil each term (i.e. $60 per year) to enable parents and teachers to budget for the cost of educational trips and visiting performers. Payment may also be required for curriculum-based activities that involve a “take home” component for the student to keep, or that are only available to a select group to opt into.
Parents are informed in advance of any additional optional payments that are extra to our curriculum obligations.
Athletics Day
Thank you to all our whānau who came along to support, assist and provide ice blocks for our Athletics Day today! It was wonderful to see so many of our families here.
The weather has been good to us and the students rose to the occasion giving 100% and showing great resilience through their training too - many of them achieving their personal bests.
The next step is the collation of the results to establish those who have qualified for the Northern Zone Event in Term 4. A big thank you to Cassie Woodhouse who continues to provide great sports coordination and leadership for our school, our teaching and support staff team who rally round to make it all happen and also to our FUNdraising committee for adding the FUN into yet another Bellevue event.
We also would like to thank Newlands New World for their generous donation of the ice blocks to our event - they were very much enjoyed by us all!
He rau ringa e oti ai - Many hands make light work!

First Language Hui
At Bellevue we value the many different cultures, languages, and identities that make up our school community. We believe it is important to foster the strengths of cultural and linguistic diversity. All languages are a taonga (treasure).
This year, we will be holding ‘First Language Hui’. Students who share the same language will be invited to come together and participate in rich oral language and hands on activities. The focus of these groups will be to celebrate our first language with others who speak it. Our first hui will be for Mandarin speakers.
Through maintaining their own languages, students have their learning enhanced as well as it helping in the acquisition of other languages.
Paid Union Meeting for teachers - Your Support Please
The NZEI are holding Paid Union Meetings this term as they continue to advocate for the learning conditions in our schools.
In order to allow for our teaching team to attend these with minimal disruption to the classroom programmes, our Bellevue teaching staff will be attending the same session - 2-3pm on Thursday 4 April.
We are therefore requesting that those families who are able to, please collect their child from school on Thursday 4 April at 1.10pm (the start of second play). Students who are not able to be picked up will remain at school under the supervision of Annette and staff not attending the meetings. An alternative programme will be run for these students. Please use THIS LINK to notify us of the plan for your child this afternoon before 8am on Wednesday 3 April, so we can plan for safe student supervision.
Please note that we ask all children in Years 1-3 to be picked up from their classroom by an adult (unless they can walk home with an older sibling). For our students in Year 4-6 we require approval via this form prior to 8am on Wednesday 3 April to allow them to walk home. Students’ safety remains our top priority. Thank you for your ongoing support of our team.
Reflecting on Aroha
With our development of refreshed values under the overarching concept of Aroha last year, we were fortunate to work alongside some of our informed and inspiring whānau Māori. We are keen to establish these hui again this year, but have been working on the challenge set by our whānau of having Te Āti Awa representation at these in the meantime. As part of last year’s work, we were offered the loan of a beautiful book of ‘Aroha - Māori wisdom for a contented life in harmony with our planet’ by Dr Hinemoa Elder. We would like to share a whakatauaki (proverb or significant saying) each newsletter to provoke reflection and build a deeper understanding in our school community of what we are talking about when we refer to Aroha.
This week we begin with the one below - something we have been thinking about a lot as we build learning communities for 2024 within our learning community.
Te Reo Tuatahi
We are continuing to grow our understanding and knowledge of Pepeha. Kaiako and ākonga are currently learning about the people in their whānau as we add more lines to our personal pepeha about whānau members who are important to each of us. We are also exploring and describing the landmarks and bodies of water that are special to our whānau. KIA ORA. KO _______ TE MAUNGA. KO ______ TE AWA/ROTO/MOANA. NŌ ______ ŌKU TĪPUNA. NŌ ______ AHAU. KO ______ TŌKU MĀMĀ. KO ______ TŌKU PĀPĀ. KO ______ AHAU. TĒNĀ KOUTOU. Questions you might discuss with your child/ren to support their in class learning are Who are the important people in your whānau? What landmarks or bodies of water are important to your whānau?
Aroha Achievements (the new and updated BELL Challenge!)
In 2012, the BELL Challenge was created to encourage and celebrate an enduring love of learning at Bellevue School. For 2024, this concept has been adapted to create ‘Bellevue’s Aroha Achievements’. ‘Bellevue’s Aroha Achievements’ link to our school’s new overarching concept of Aroha and the values that live branching off of this: Integrity, Resilience, Empathy and Creativity. Just as with the BELL Challenge, ‘Bellevue’s Aroha Achievements’ are an optional Home Learning achievement for Years 3 - 6. The way you complete ‘Bellevue’s Aroha Achievements’ varies depending on which year group you are in. In Year 3 you complete 4 tasks, in Year 4 you complete 5 tasks, in Year 5 you complete 6 tasks, and in Year 6 you complete 7 tasks. You can complete more if you wish! Tasks are to be completed in your child’s own time rather than in school time, and must be seen by their teacher once completed. If your child completes the amount of tasks needed for their year group then they will be presented with a certificate and badge during Term 4's Celebration Assembly. And don’t worry if they have been completing the BELL Challenge and collecting the badges that come with it - they can collect the same badges with the new ‘Aroha Achievements’, so they haven’t missed out! This week, Year 3 - 6 students will be coming home with a copy of ‘Bellevue’s Aroha Achievements’. We look forward to seeing how everyone shows Aroha throughout the year!
Life Education Visit
In Week 10 and 11 of this term, Harold and Marsha will be visiting Bellevue in the Life Education Truck. Each class will visit the truck twice. Visits to the Life Education Truck cost $6 per student. This is covered by the termly Trips and Performances fee.
Life Education helps children
develop life skills relating to their health and wellbeing
understand how to make healthy choices
gain knowledge about health and their bodies
develop self esteem and a positive understanding of themselves
develop strategies for relating to others
Each Hub has chosen focus questions to guide the learning during the visits to the Life Education Truck.
New Entrants—Enrol Now!
We encourage you to enrol your preschoolers as soon as they turn 4. This assists with future planning for our kura and classes. Out of zone enrolment applications close approximately six months prior to commencement date so it is important to submit these early to ensure you are in the ballot. We accept up to five out of zone new entrant applications per term.
Important information about the Bellevue School enrolment scheme (zone)
If you have preschoolers at home that you are planning to enrol at Bellevue School in the future, here are a few important things to know and put into action:
1. If you are living outside of the Bellevue School enrolment zone, then your preschooler(s) will need to be processed as an out of zone application. Please let us know, if you haven’t already, of any future enrolments at Bellevue School from your family. It helps greatly with our planning to know well in advance. And if we know then we can also prompt you as to when you need to get your out of zone application in.
2. It is very important that out of zone applications are received by the application deadline of Friday 29 March 2024 , for enrolment from Saturday 22 July 2024 to Friday 27 September 2024. We cannot accept any out of zone applications if they are not received by the deadline advertised for the enrolment period your child is due to start school in. The deadline can sometimes be up to six months prior to your child actually starting school.
3. Even if your preschooler(s) are in zone, please get your enrolment in to us as soon as possible to enable us to plan ahead. We need this information to be able to work out how many out of zone applications we can accept in each enrolment period.
If you have any questions or are unsure about anything, please call the school office and talk to Amanda.
Vision & Hearing Screening - Opt out form
The school offers free vision and hearing screening through Hutt Valley DHB on an annual basis. If you wish to opt out of this for your child, please click the link below to complete the opt out form. If you do not complete the form below we will assume you are opting in.

The Vision/Hearing Technician will be visiting school on Tuesday 19 & Wednesday 20 March.
Whakawhanaungatanga Fridays
This next Whakawhanaungatanga Friday will be in Week 8 ( 22 March).
During Whakawhanaungatanga Fridays children are:
1. Learning in rich and authentic contexts, relevant to their own experiences and interests.
2. Developing dispositional skills, such as collaboration, risk taking, and leadership.
3. Living values that we hold dear at Bellevue School, such as empathy, integrity, resilience, and creativity.
We warmly invite whānau to come along and play, explore and learn alongside your child/ren during any of the sessions this year. There is no need to commit in advance and you are welcome to stay for as little or as long as you are able. We would love to see you. Sessions will run this year from 11:50am - 1:05pm on any of these days. On arrival, please head to the office and you will be able to find where your child/ren will be for the afternoon.
Yummy Sticker Collection
This year we are collecting Yummy stickers and bag labels again. If you have any, please send them along to your child’s whānau teacher. At the end of the year the stickers and labels are converted into money for us to spend on new sports equipment for the school!
