Things to Know!
- I wanted to bring the Worlds of Fun flyer/infographic up to the top of the newsletter as we near spring break. This flyer has been in our newsletter all year, but when we return to from spring break on March 31st, the qualifier for your child to attend Worlds of Fun will begin. From March 31st to May 2nd, we'll be focusing on a few key areas that will determine who gets to join us for a day of rides, games, and unforgettable memories. We want to encourage all our students to aim high during this time. To qualify for the Worlds of Fun trip, we're looking for students who demonstrate a commitment to being present and on time, with excellent attendance (at least 90% of school days during that time line) and no more than 5 tardies to class total. Positive behavior is also essential, meaning avoiding In-School Suspension (ISS) or Out-of-School Suspension (OSS). Furthermore, students will need to have at least 600 Live School Points in their bank account from demonstrating positive behavior and engagement in school activities. Lastly, students must meeting the expectation points on MAP/EOC testing. Those points will come from being on task/respectful, have an iPad charged to 90% or more each day, having something to do when done testing, and spending at least 50% or more of the recommended testing time on each section. This Worlds of Fun trip will in mid-May. Let’s rally behind our students and encourage them to meet these goals so they can join us for a day of fun and celebration at Worlds of Fun! We have every confidence in our students' ability to achieve these targets, and we're here to support them every step of the way.
- A huge thank you to our HMS PTSA for paying for every 6th grader to attend a field trip to Kauffman Stadium this past week. The students represented HMS amazing and they had the best time. We are so grateful to our PTSA for always ensuring our students get to enjoy one field trip a year!

Understanding Attendance
Over the past few weeks I have had some great conversations with families who were seeking clarification on our district attendance policy and, because of those conversations, I thought it might be worthwhile to ensure we are all on the same page regarding student absences. We value your partnership in your child's education and believe that clear communication is essential for our continued success.
First and foremost, we want to emphasize that the health and well-being of our students and staff are our top priority. If your child is ill, we encourage you to keep them at home to recover and prevent the spread of illness to others. We greatly appreciate it when you notify us of your child's absence, as this communication helps us ensure the safety of all our students and allows us to plan accordingly. Please continue to call the school or email Ms. Houseworth when your child will be absent.
Additionally, it is important to understand that even when an absence is called in and excused, it still affects your child's overall attendance percentage. This is because attendance is based on the physical presence of a student in the classroom. While we recognize the difference between excused and unexcused absences, both types impact the total time a student spends learning in school. Because of this, families might receive attendance letters if your child were to dip below a certain percentage to ensure you all are aware and we can stay connected.
Our goal in sharing this information is to foster a clear understanding of how attendance is calculated and reported. We believe that regular attendance is crucial for academic success and want to work with you to ensure your child has the best possible educational experience. If you have any questions or concerns about our attendance policy or your child's specific situation, please don't hesitate to reach out to our office. We are here to support you and your child.
As always, thank you for your continued partnership.
