What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
My latest discovery amongst our library shelves is a historical fiction novel, 'The Dollhouse,' by Fiona Davis. I would also categorize this book as a mystery and yes, it is worth reading. This fast-paced book invites you into the lives of Rose, a modern-day journalist, and Darby, a young woman who had gone to secretary school and was staying at the Barbizon Hotel, in 1952. The story is based on the mystery of what happened between a maid, and Darby herself…ending in death. Not only does Rose discover the truth of that fateful night in 1952, but she also finds her own strength and the meaning of true friendship along the way.
If you are searching for a new author to check out, we have quite a selection of her novels here at our library.
I am currently reading 'The Lions of Fifth Avenue' by Fiona Davis.
Happy reading friends,
~Lisa
Have a busy week and short on time? Consider reading Curtis Sittenfeld's collection of short stories titled 'Show Don't Tell.' This was my first time reading this author and I think I will try one of her novels next! She is quite apt at unraveling the emotional lives of ordinary women, but also funny, which can be tricky. My favorites from this collection were 'White Women Lol' and 'The Patron Saints of Middle Age.'
"A funny, fiercely intelligent, and moving collection exploring marriage, friendship, fame, and artistic ambition." ~Goodreads.com (4.02 rating)
Happy reading, friends! ~Heather
In the last year you have probably heard the phrase, "Let Them." If not, I highly recommend listening to Mel Robbin's podcast and reading this book. One thing that I like about Mel, is that she is so relatable! As I was reading this book, I felt like it was her and I having a conversation and she knew exactly how I was feeling. Another reason why I love Mel so much, is that she can turn the scientific facts into something that I can understand and retain. I am being honest and vulnerable here when I say I laughed, cried, self-reflected and let go of my ego. I will forever use the "Let Them" theory while also embracing "Let Me."
~Kellie

We are excited to announce that ‘The Queen of Sugar Hill’ by ReShonda Tate is the featured title for #TogetherWeRead! Together We Read is a digital book club connecting readers to the same ebook & audiobook at the same time - no waitlists, no holds.
"The Queen of Sugar Hill" tells the story of Hattie McDaniel, the first African American woman to win an Academy Award, focusing on her life after her Oscar win for "Gone With the Wind" and the challenges she faced as a Black actress navigating Hollywood's challenging social landscape, particularly highlighting her struggles with restrictive housing covenants in a neighborhood called "Sugar Hill" where she bought a home despite facing backlash from white neighbors; the book explores her personal life, friendships with other Hollywood figures, and fight for racial equality.
