Tomorrow, there is no school as we observe the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. One of my favorite quotes from Dr. King is “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter". This quote emphasizes the importance of speaking up about things that are important. At Roberto Clemente Middle School, we work with the students about speaking up when they see something, when they feel something or when they need something.

RCMS STEM Fair

'The Roberto Clemente MS PTA is holding a new STEM Fair which will take place at 5:30 PM on Feb 20th (Thursday), 2025! We would like to invite all our students and their families to participate in this exciting and educational event. Students, or teams of students, feel free to work with your family or friends! The participants will be exploring a topic in the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math, and receive four (4) SSL hours! You will then present your project in any of the following ways: Make a traditional tri-fold display; present it on a short video and display it on a computer; write a short report; make a Google slides presentation; make a short video news report; make your own website; or use a combination of these methods. If you have another presentation idea, let us know!

'¡El PTA Roberto Clemente MS está llevando a cabo una nueva Feria STEM que se llevará a cabo a las 5:30 PM el 20 de febrero (jueves) de 2025! Nos gustaría invitar a todos nuestros estudiantes y sus familias a participar en este emocionante y educativo evento. ¡Estudiantes, o equipos de estudiantes, siéntanse libres de trabajar con su familia o amigos! 'With great support from Mr. Brown and Mr. Young, we will organize the RCMS Science Olympiad team (up to 15 students) to participate in the Maryland Science Olympiad Div. B East/West Regional Tournament on March 1st, 2025, at Richard Montgomery High School. There are 23 events and 3 trial events, which are simple and fun scientific questions, experiments and explorations. Each event lasts about 50 min and needs 2-3 students to participate. Since this is a parent-organized team, participants’ parents are responsible to coach the students for the events and transportations. This is NOT an afterschool club. It is flexible and no fixed schedule for the team. All training documents, rule books and videos will be provided. Based on the interest and events’ schedule, students can sign up for multiple events and will receive SSL hours per event. The award ceremony will be held at the end of the day, so students are encouraged to sign up for multiple events. The total cost for the team’s registration is $375 and will be shared among team members. Find your friends, have fun, do some research and explore science! Message from Ms. Long regarding upcoming ACCESS for ELLs Testing

ACCESS for ELLs: January 13th - February 18th

Each year, students in English learner programs take the ACCESS for ELLs language proficiency test. The test measures academic English language proficiency for students learning English in our school and throughout our state.

Teachers in our school use this information to help them make decisions about instruction for your child. Teachers also use these test scores to monitor the progress your child makes toward English proficiency.

The Excel Beyond the Bell program is currently accepting registration forms for their Spring Session starting on Monday, January 27th.

Excel Beyond the Bell is a free after school program that provides students with a variety of activities after school. Activities include Basketball, Karate, Art, Cheerleading, STEM, Cooking and much more. Students also receive a free meal and snack each day.

The EBB program runs Monday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Students should report the cafeteria right after school to receive their meal before heading to their activities.

MCPS activity buses are provided for students and leave no later than at 5:45pm each day.

Registration forms are taken on a first come, first serve basis, and should be returned to the Clemente main office or emailed to EBB.Clemente@montgomerycountymd.gov.

A final roster of activities will be posted in front the school cafeteria prior to the first day of the program.

Spaces are limited, please sign your student up today! Attached is the brochure and registration form. Please be sure that both forms are filled out completely.

On Friday, January 31st, ALL 6th grade students will participate in an in-school field trip, Passport Through China. This day of interdisciplinary exploration is designed to connect the learning that has occurred in different subject areas while celebrating different aspects of Chinese culture. The cost for this event is $9, which covers a performance, buffet lunch and materials associated with the day. This payment can be made online using the SchoolCash online payment system. While all 6th grade students will participate in this day, a permission slip is required in order for students to eat the buffet lunch. This will be distributed to students through their Science classes no later than Monday, January 6th. Permission slips are requested back by Friday, January 17th and can be given to Ms. Courtemanche, Ms. Nesselt or Ms. Gall. This year, RCMS has implemented Zones of Regulation schoolwide.

The purpose of Zones is to help students recognize and manage their emotions.

During Quarter 1, RCMS staff will focus on:

• discussing the four colors of Zones with students (green, blue, yellow and red)
• providing a space for students to work through their feelings when big emotions come to the surface

Throughout the year, we will discuss strategies for emotional regulation and how to communicate our feelings appropriately in our shared spaces.

This year, students will continue to have the opportunity to go outside for “recess” after they finish their lunch. This year, students are not allowed to bring balls or toys of any type to school. In the interest of student and staff safety, no outside food or deliveries will be allowed. As a reminder, per MCPS guidelines, any adult entering the school building will be asked for picture identification.

Ensuring safe drop-off and pick-up is part of our renewed focus on safety and security. As a reminder, traffic in front of the building and in the carpool lane is very busy before and after school. When dropping off your child, please help us by pulling up as far forward as possible, abiding by the lines in the drop off loop. Please plan your travel time so that your child arrives at school with enough time to go to their locker and arrive in class on time. We also ask that the staff parking lot not be utilized for drop-off purposes. For the safety of all children, please be sure to obey all traffic laws when dropping off and picking up, including no U-turns or stopping to drop-off students on Waring Station Road.

Dear 6th Grade Families,

It's almost the end of the first semester of middle school for our 6th graders! As we get closer to closing out grades, please sit down with your students over the long weekend and have them check each of their class tiles and their grades to see what they have outstanding. We're encouraging all of our students to advocate and communicate with their teachers. Writing an email together is a great lesson for them!

It is that time of the year to announce our End of the Year event dates!!! We will provide more details when we have them to share. Save the dates for:

June 2-our Semi Formal Dance

From 5-8pm promptly at RCMS cafeteria

June 3-our field trip to Smokey Glen

During the school day

June 4-our End of the Year Celebration (this is our promotional event)

From 4:30-6:30pm at RCMS block party style

Chocolate during lunch: This fundraiser is selling chocolate during the first part of lunch on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. We will sell chocolate until we are out of chocolate. All funds during the 8th grade lunch sales will go directly to 8th grade. Below is the flyer with all of the information on the cost ($1 per bar) and types of chocolate bars we have.

8th grade ONLY ABC Dance:

On February 7th during periods 7 and 8, 8th grade students who have No D’s or E’s on your report card will be able to attend a dance hosted by the TAC team. We will also have a Hot Chocolate Bar during the dance! Students will have a pass and will be permitted to come to the cafeteria AFTER checking in with their 7th period teacher.

8th grade T Shirts:

Rising 9th grader informational night is January 23, 2025 at 7pm!

The application for the Ulysses Signature Program Class of 2029 at Northwest High School is now open! Interested 8th graders who live in the Northwest cluster are eligible to apply. The application can be found on the Northwest website, under the Quick Links menu option for “Ulysses Signature Program” then navigating to the “Admissions” tab. You can also find the application linked here along with more information about the program. The deadline for submitting applications is February 14th, 2025. If you have any questions about the application process or the Ulysses Program, please contact Mr. David Parks david_p_parks@mcpsmd.org. HIGH SCHOOLS Fair:

All of our feeder schools will be joining us on January 22nd. The students will go to their feeder school to learn about programs, high school courses, expectations and meet their counselors. They will also get information on how to sign up for their courses. All registration forms/cards are due back to RCMS by January 28th! We will get this information to your home high schools.

Those of you who signed up for a program. If you get accepted to a program and accept it, then your feeder school will send your registration information to your new high school program.

Pueblo, an organization in Germantown, is partnering with Roberto Clemente to offer an after school club in Spanish for Latino students grades 6-8th. This club is a great way to build friendships and gain student service learning hours. It will be held every Tuesday starting February 4, transportation and food will be provided. Spaces are limited, please reach out to Maya Vakas by phone or text to 240-796-0303 if you are interested and a permission slip will be provided to your student.
