Cool Classrooms
Ahoy matey!! On August 18 members from both Accelerated English 10 classes set sail on the Detroit River with the Inland Seas Education Association out of Suttons Bay, Michigan. On the three-masted schooner, Alliance, students engaged in authentic learning of how to raise sails on a ship and take water quality samples with plankton. The ship traveled along the river to various stations including lessons in the cultural and ecological story of the Detroit River, or a timed competition to assemble a puzzle of the Great Lakes. Below deck, students examined their plankton sample using scientific tools. A favorite activity for some was the "two minutes of silence" - no phones, no talking, just sitting on the deck of the ship with the sensory experience offered by the breeze, the water, the ship itself, and their own thoughts.
