Suggested items include individually wrapped snacks such as granola bars, cheese sticks, Goldfish crackers, applesauce pouches, Nutri-Grain bars, and protein bars. Elementary Highlights
Indoor Recess
During the recent cold snap, we had indoor recess for most of the week. As the cold weather continues, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for outdoor play. We keep students inside when the temperature is below 20 degrees. However, if it is between 15-20 degrees, students with proper winter gear may have a short outdoor break to get fresh air and move around. Please send your child to school prepared to go outside each day.
Second Quarter Report Cards
Report cards have been mailed home! Please take a moment to review your child’s progress. If you have any questions about your child’s grades, please reach out to their teacher to schedule a phone or in-person conference. We appreciate your partnership in your child’s learning!
February Tip: Teaching children how to handle disappointment
Here are some effective strategies:
1. Acknowledge Their Feelings
Let them know it’s okay to feel sad, frustrated, or upset.
Use phrases like, “I see that you’re really disappointed. That’s understandable.”
2. Normalize Disappointment
Share age-appropriate personal experiences of when you faced disappointment and how you handled it.
Read books that feature characters overcoming setbacks.
3. Teach Problem-Solving Skills
Help them brainstorm ways to handle similar situations in the future.
Encourage a “What can I do next time?” mindset.
4. Encourage a Growth Mindset
Remind them that failure and disappointment are part of learning.
Use phrases like, “You didn’t win this time, but what did you learn?”
5. Model Healthy Coping Strategies
Demonstrate how to take deep breaths, count to 10, or take a short break.
Encourage using positive self-talk like, “I can try again.”
6. Focus on Gratitude and Perspective
Help them see the bigger picture by discussing what they are thankful for.
Teach them to reframe setbacks as temporary challenges.
7. Give Opportunities to Practice
Allow them to experience small disappointments, like losing a game, to build resilience.
Praise their efforts in handling disappointment well.

If you are looking for a fun activity for your teenager this weekend, please join the PIE parents as they host a teen Western Valentine dance party along with food and other fun activities on Saturday, February 15th in the commons from 5-7 pm. Bring the whole family!
It’s been cold outside this week, but Reardan Middle School students have warmed their “hearts” by working on more book recommendations as they play with figurative language by creating metaphors about the main characters of books they’ve read and loved. Thanks to Kristy Koch for fostering a LOVE of READING during this Valentine’s month! The more we talk about books we’ve loved and share those books with others, the more students will understand that reading is not a chore, but a lifelong habit that brings joy.
Boys Basketball is having a fantastic season! It is amazing to see the future of Reardan basketball happening right here in Smith gym. Coaches Logan Flaa, Brian Graham, and Ian Wagner are building the next generation of champions through a strong work ethic, solid skills and teamwork. Our last two home games are February 20th and 24th starting at 4 pm. Please join us to cheer these guys on.
Band students are on the road! With district basketball this week and next at West Valley High School, our pep band students are shining brightly as they support both the boys and girls HS basketball teams on their quests to reach the state tournament. Thank you parents for your support of our middle school students!
