Security Measures for Special Collections
Are your collections safe from theft? from premeditated or accidental damage? from environmental damage? Does your repository have check-out and return procedures for users in place? How is sound is your collection monitoring process?
Libraries, historical societies, and archives need security measures in place to assure that collections are protected when in use or when shelved. Policies and procedures should be in place to assure that adequate security measures are followed and that the repository has a strategy for responding to thefts. Security arrangements may vary from one institution to another and are dependent on staffing, physical setting, and use. Come to the Special Collections Roundtable meeting for a panel discussion on security planning and practices for reading rooms and collection storage areas.
Panelists: Michelle Chiles, RI Historical Society; Patrick Crowley, Rare Book Librarian; Karen Eberhart, Brown University Libraries; Molly Bruce Patterson, Newport Historical Society
The Roundtable session will also include a tour of the South Kingston Public Library's special collections.

Grants Awarded by RI Heritage Harbor Foundation
Dr. Patrick T. Conley, President of the Heritage Harbor Foundation, announced that the Foundation has awarded $86,155 in grant money for 2019 to twelve local organizations. The purpose of the grants is to support projects aimed at increasing the awareness of Rhode Island adults and school-age students of their historical, ethnic, and cultural heritage.
What is the Heritage Harbor Foundation?
- Ensure the permanent record of a program, project or initiative survives (such as a publication, film, script or recording)
- Uncover neglected aspects of Rhode Island’s history, particularly the stories of industrialization and immigration, and those which are most relevant to the state’s present-day population;
- Improve access to educational resources, such as developing curricular materials or by making existing scholarly information more accessible to teachers and students; and
- Increase collaboration between the state’s history and heritage organizations.
