MAY 29, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
SLPHS families,
I appreciate the last weeks of school and all the ways I get to see students demonstrating their learning. There are so many great examples of student performance and showing what they know and can do.
In addition to classroom projects and performances, our Opportunities in Emergency Care students are wrapping up industry certification exams. Our construction trades classes are moving projects toward completion. The Band and Choir have their final performances. Today, we had community and business partners working with our Economics and Business classes on financial literacy projects. And, our jazz band will be performing live music throughout the building before school next week.
In our staff meeting this morning, we revisited our commitment to keep students engaged and learning through the last day of school. We cherish the time we have with students to contribute to their post-secondary readiness and want to take full advantage of each day. Please continue to reinforce the importance of remaining focused and engaged through June 6.
It has been a great year filled with growth and learning for students and staff at SLPHS. Thank you for your partnership. Let’s end the year strong as we build bright futures together.
One school, one community, #SLPPantherProud!

Free Meals for Kids mobile app
Hunger Impact Partners, a non-profit organization with the Minnesota Department of Education that promotes free healthy summer meals for kids across the state, is encouraging students and families to download the Free Meals for Kids mobile app to find free food locations and other supports this summer.
Here’s how it works:
- Download the free app to your smart phone. Simply search Free Meals for Kids and download the app via the Apple Store or Google Play Store.
- Use the mobile app to find nearest site serving meals by GPS, including days and hours of operation.
- Kids up to age 18 just show up and eat with no registration required at most sites. There are free serving sites across the state at parks, recreation centers, community centers and libraries.
As a reminder, SLP will also have free meals available this summer at several school locations for all children in the community ages 1-18. Learn more.

Class of 2024 Senior Spotlight
We have asked our graduating seniors to share their plans for the future, favorite experiences and what makes them Panther Proud. Each week, we will continue to share student spotlights as we celebrate the Class of 2024. Read more about each spotlight's time at SLP.
Thomas Kunkel
"I’m Panther Proud for our school’s strong sense of community. The supportive environment, along with the wide range of opportunities, means there’s a place for everyone at SLP."
Thomas plans to attend University of Wisconsin-Madison to study Electrical Engineering.
Whitney Lawrence-Msuya
"I’ve grown with the people in the halls and have made strong connections which makes for a really unique place to go to every day. I am proud of how far everyone around me has come and the community that is still growing, especially those in sports, music, and OEC."
After graduation, Whitney plans to go to Concordia-Saint Paul to become a nurse.
Joel Sjerven
"I have appreciation for all the amazing teachers and staff as well as all the opportunities that have been able to help show me my interests and passions."
Joel plans to continue down the entrepreneurship pathway and grow his business and invest in real estate.
SLPHS students have hands-on learning
Child Development 2 students from the high school visited Northpoint Elementary to dive into the world of working with kids. They first heard presentations from elementary teachers on behaviors and observed morning meeting, then the high schoolers eventually got a chance to lead vocabulary lessons through games in 1st and 2nd grade classrooms. A fun day to gain that hands-on experience with what they've been studying in class.
SLPHS students working toward their EMT certification
Last Wednesday, 32 students passed the first of two evaluations in earning their National Registry EMT certification. This is a great accomplishment for these students!
Ready, set...5th grade!
The tradition, known as Track & Field Day, brings fourth graders from all four elementary schools together at Panther Stadium for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie. It’s a fun way to support the transition to fifth grade when everyone comes together at Westwood.
This year, the weather was ideal with plenty of sunshine and blue skies. Kids and staff are dressed in T-shirts color-coded to their elementary school. Physical Education teacher Dean Downs is stationed up in the press box with a microphone. As students run, jump and toss their way through the various athletic events, he provides colorful commentary along with energetic tunes. Families of students, community members and high schoolers circle the track or sit in the stands to cheer. Read more about the day and view photos in the story.
Last call for summer programming
There is still time to make it a full summer at SLP with programs for grades K-12, families and adults. Through each experience, we’ll keep participants learning, growing and having fun. Find your SPARK today!
