THE LION'S DEN
April 2025 Edition
April Fools!
As we step into April, a month filled with blooming flowers and warmer days, we also welcome a day known for laughter, harmless pranks, and lighthearted fun—April Fools’ Day! But have you ever wondered how this tradition began?
April Fools’ Day dates back centuries, with its origins somewhat of a mystery. Some historians believe it started in the 16th century when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, changing New Year’s Day from April 1st to January 1st. Those who didn’t get the news or refused to accept the change continued celebrating in April and were often mocked as “April fools.” Others trace its roots to ancient Roman and medieval celebrations that embraced playful deception and mischief.
No matter its origins, April Fools’ Day has become a fun tradition worldwide, reminding us all to enjoy a little laughter. As we continue through this busy school year, let’s embrace the spirit of joy, learning, and community that makes Shady Hills Elementary such a wonderful place!
Wishing you a fantastic April.
Embracing Autism Awareness Month
This month is dedicated to increasing understanding, fostering inclusion, and embracing the uniqueness of individuals with autism.
Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), affects how a person communicates, learns, and experiences the world. Every individual with autism is unique, with their own strengths, challenges, and incredible potential. At Shady Hills Elementary, we believe in celebrating these differences and ensuring that every student feels valued, understood, and supported.
Throughout April, we encourage kindness, acceptance, and awareness. Whether it’s learning more about autism, supporting a friend, or simply spreading positivity, every small action makes a big difference. Let’s take this opportunity to promote an inclusive community where all students can thrive!
FAST Testing
Your student will take the computer-based Grade 4 or 5 Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Writing assessment. 4th graders will take their assessment on April 3rd and 5th graders will take their assessment on April 8th. The B.E.S.T. Writing assessment is administered in one 120-minute session, and students may work up to half of a typical school day. Your school will provide information about how to access the test results.
