Online Learning Opportunities for Libraries
Libraries and librarians are continuously changing to keep up with the needs of their communities and patrons. However, it can be difficult for many librarians to travel or leave the library to attend every in-person training or speaker. Online learning provides opportunities for library staff to learn on their own schedule and pace. DigitalLearn.org, WebJunction, and ALA eLearning all provide library-specific trainings, webinars, and guides.
DigitalLearn.org
DigitalLearn.org is an online hub for digital literacy support and training. The Public Library Association launched the site in June 2013 and builds upon and fosters the work of libraries and community organizations. Some topics include:
- “Starting Out” - Basic computer user information
- “Safety online” - Understanding passwords
- “Job skills” - Creating resumes
WebJunction
The WebJunction Course Catalog is an online learning environment of library-related self-paced courses and webinar recordings. It uses the open source learning management system Moodle to manage and record learning activity, allowing individuals to enroll in, engage with and complete learning experiences, while maintaining an ongoing learning history. The South Dakota State Library provides access to WebJunction for South Dakota library staff.
ALA eLearning
ALA eLearning provides courses, webinars, and customized eLearning content for library and information workers in all types of libraries and related organizations. Designed to meet your evolving learning needs, ALA eLearning brings together content from every office and division of ALA in one place. ALA eLearning offers both free and paid content.
