What's the "Buzz?"
September 2024
Welcome Back Centerville Elementary Students and Families!
Welcome back to the 2024-2025 school year! We are very excited to be back at school working with your children. Their excitement and enthusiasm is contagious and truly makes our school "buzz!" We look forward to seeing you all soon at our upcoming Open House. This year we are using a new format for our school newsletters with an app called Smore. We hope you like it! Read ahead for more beginning of the school year information.
Establishing Routines
Now that school is back in session and summer vacation is over, it’s important to start implementing routines into your child’s schedule now. Setting earlier bedtimes and wake up times and limiting screen time will support your child with transitioning into the new school year. Here is an article that might help:
Drop Off/Pickup Procedures
Being in school every day, on time, is extremely important for school success. If your child is riding the bus, they will need a current bus pass securely attached to their backpack. If you have any questions about transportation issues, please call the Transportation Office at (508) 790-6498 or visit the Barnstable Public Schools website. https://www.barnstable.k12.ma.us/Domain/58
Centerville Elementary's school day is from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm.
Arrival:
- 8:50- Students may enter the building. Students may not be here before 8:50 . Children will enter school and go to the walking track with their classroom teacher when weather permits.
9:00-Official start time of the school day. Students arriving after 9:00 are tardy and must be escorted into school by a parent/guardian who will be asked to sign their child into school.
Car Drop Off
All students who arrive by car must be dropped off between 8:50 and 9:00. Cars will drive into the large or small circle in the front of the building. For safety reasons, students are not allowed to exit until your vehicle has passed the fire hydrant. Students will remain in cars until a staff member signals it’s okay to exit. If you do not arrive by 9:00 a.m. you will need to walk your child into school and sign him/her into school.
Please do not leave an unattended car running outside of the school.
BUS DROP OFF
Students who arrive by bus will be dropped off in the back parking lot of the school. Staff members will be there to greet students as they exit the bus and enter the school.
Dismissal
3:25-Students being picked up are called to the front of the school when their parent/guardian arrives. For safety purposes, have your car sign visible, remain in your vehicle and follow the line of cars. You will be instructed to turn off your vehicle by a staff member. All vehicles must be turned off before students exit the building.
3:35- Bus students are dismissed from their classrooms when the buses arrive. Buses typically depart by 3:40 p.m.
Breakfast/Lunch/Snack at Centerville Elementary
All Centerville Elementary students are eligible for universal free breakfast and lunch. We also received a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant that will allow all students to sample a healthy fruit or vegetable on Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays. In addition, classrooms will have a designated snack time so sending your child to school with a snack each day is beneficial.
Before/After School Day Care
As of now, our daycare program has openings. If you need before or after school daycare for your child please complete the registration form by clicking this link: Kindergarten through Grade 3 Registration Form. If you have any questions, please feel free to call and ask for Lisa Carlon, who runs the Daycare program here at Centerville.
News from the Health Office
Happy September! As the new school year starts and the seasons change, an increase in respiratory illness is bound to happen.
It is also important during this time that students get their flu shots as it is the best way to defend against the flu.
Talk to your pediatrician about flu vaccines and potential need for seasonal allergy medicine.
If a student is feeling ill it is important to call the Health Office to let us know your student will be absent for the day. Our voicemail is confidential. Please see attached information regarding attendance.
We will start screenings in the next few weeks, please let us know if there are any updates to your student’s vision or hearing.
As we continue into the month of September, the weather starts to cool down. It is important that students have extra layers for the possibility of cold weather. Accidents and spills can happen to anyone! Please pack extra clothes in your students backpack in addition to an extra pair of underwear, pants, and shirts are greatly appreciated.
Please also make sure that your child’s emergency contact is up to date. If the nurses are unable to reach you, we will try the next available contact.
The nurses at Centerville wanted to remind the students and families the importance of hand washing. Hand hygiene remains one of the most important ways to stop the spread of illnesses. It is important that students exercise hand hygiene, with hand sanitizer, or soap and hot water.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact the health office at 508-790-9890 x2.
Thank you,
Nurse Santos & Nurse Gale
