Terry Fox Fundraising Results
KPS raised a whopping $4,977! Way to go KPS!! Thank you to each and everyone who donated to support the Terry Fox Foundation.
Since we raised WAY over our goal of $3,500, Mr. Gratrix and Mr. Holben shaved their head! Thank you both for being great sports!!
Staff Spotlight
Hi everyone, my name is Vanessa Borgel. I grew up in Lougheed and married David Borgel of Killam 21 years ago. We have three girls (Halle, Liberty and Aspen) and a Maltese dog named Blu.
I have been teaching for 22 years, mostly in Killam. However, when I am not at school I can be found watching my kids play sports, helping out on the farm, volunteering at the Iron Creek Museum, travelling or spending time with friends and family.
Some of my favourite "me" things are getting a coffee from Starbucks, checking out what is new at Lululemon or Twig, and exploring little towns and abandoned houses.
A saying that really resonates with me is, "Everything Happens for a Reason."
A huge thank you to Killam Home Hardware (Darek and Stacey Graff) for donating 60 pails for music classes. We are looking forward to doing some bucket drumming! We can't wait to make some music!

Taking Language Learning Outside
In the 2023-2024 school year, BRSD received financial assistance through the Low-Incidence Supports and Services Grant. This allowed us to offset the high cost of specialized equipment, assistive technology, resources, materials, and specialized consultative services. Posted in our early learning classrooms, we have Core Language Boards, which help develop critical expressive and receptive language. Within this grant, we were able to extend these resources into playgrounds. We are so thankful for Jen Hauck and her team who spent time installing these signs over the past few weeks. They look great! Hopefully, our students and staff have noticed the additions.
Hockey Hooky
We are excited to announce that we have secured complimentary tickets for all grade 4 - 9 students to attend the Kodiaks Hockey Hooky game on Oct. 16 at 12 pm in Camrose. Parent Advisory has generously donated funds to cover busing as well. There will be a consent form online on Friday, October 4, this form NEEDS to be filled out prior to leaving on October 16.
What is Hockey Hooky
Hockey Hooky is a yearly tradition of cheering on the Camrose Kodiaks during a school afternoon. The Kodiaks encourage BRSD students to engage by providing free tickets to schools who choose to attend. Every year, the arena is packed with schools, creating an exciting, memorable experience and opportunity for BRSD students. This event is more than just a hockey game; it is a chance to witness the teamwork, sportsmanship and the excitement of the game, firsthand.
What to bring
Students are encouraged to bring a lunch in a disposable lunch bag (this limits lost lunch items) and a small snack (ie granola bar) that they can tuck in a pocket. There is a concession available, however, the lines are very long and students who choose to purchase from the concession may spend much of their time in line.
Students are encouraged to wear a hockey jersey, or Kodiaks colours (red, white and black) to the game to show their support!
What to expect that day
Buses will leave KPS at approximately 10:45 am and return by 3:15 pm in time for busing (this may mean leaving before the end of the game). Students will bring their lunch, preferably in a disposable lunch bag. To attend, all students must have a completed permission form. There is no cost for this experience!
Fall Dance Volunteers Needed
KPS Parent Advisory will be hosting a fall dance on Friday, Oct. 25. There will be a family dance from 5-7 and Junior High Dance from 7:30 - 10. For the Junior High Dance, School Council is looking for a minimum of 4 supervisors. Supervisors will need to become agents of the board. To become an agent of the board you must have a criminal record check completed within the last 5 years and meet with either Mrs. Nelson or Mrs. Freadrich. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Mrs. Brodie in the office to get the necessary paperwork started. Parent Advisory is a valued supporter of the school and the funds raised from activities such as this go directly to supporting all our students.
Yearbook
There are 2023 - 2024 Yearbooks available for purchase from the school office. They are $25 and cheques can be made out to Killam Parent Advisory Society.
Student Re-Enrollment and Verification Forms
You must complete the Student Re-Enrollment & Verification forms every year. Mrs. Brodie will begin contacting families who have not yet completed this in the next couple of weeks. The 2024-2025 forms were sent out to each family in August. Please sign in to PowerSchool (through a browser, not the app.) There is a link on our KPS website to PowerSchool Parent Portal. Your username is your Firstname.Lastname. Click on "Forms" on the left and choose "Verification Form" and complete for each child.

CROSS COUNTRY
We have had a successful cross country season thus far! Next week runners will head off to New Norway for the final run of the series. KPS started the series with a few new runners and many returning runners but everyone is finishing the series with increased confidence and stamina. Special mention to Sara-Jane Ruzicka who placed 1st in her category at the Burma Hills Race. Thank you to Jenine Ruzicka for assisting KPS runners on race days!
VOLLEYBALL
Our Volleyball Season is well underway, with Ms. Nielsen and Candace MacKinnon coaching the girls teams. Our Girls A team took 3rd place at the OLMP tournament. In league play they defeated Holden in two sets, but lost a very close 3 game match to Sedgewick. The A girls head to Daysland this weekend and the B girls head to Terrasetta.
Boys Volleyball won their league matches with Holden and Sedgewick. This weekend the boys have their home tournament, come cheer them on!
