Welcome Back, Raiders!
Back-to-School edition of the Raider Review, 2024 - 2025!
A message from Dr. Jarred Zapolnik, superintendent of South Range Local Schools
Dear South Range Families,
It is that time of year again! Summer is ending, and we are excited to welcome our students and staff back to our buildings. This year promises to be an incredible adventure, and we cannot wait to see all that our students and staff will achieve.
I would like to personally thank everyone for a successful 2023-2024 school year—my first year serving as superintendent of our wonderful district. As we enter year two, I am energized and excited about the new school year and the opportunities the 2024-2025 school year will bring. Our amazing staff and administration will continue to focus on the following four key components of our district's goals, the Raider Way:
- High Expectations
- Communication & Collaboration
- Student Performance
- Safety & Resources
Our custodial and bus garage crews are working hard to ensure the schools and bus fleet are ready for the start of the 2024-2025 school year. The buildings, athletic complex, and classrooms are prepared to welcome students and the community. I feel very fortunate to serve as superintendent of such a great district, full of individuals committed to Getting Better Every Day (GBED)!
As we embark on the upcoming school year, we want to reflect on our traditions of excellence—from high student achievement to success in athletics and extracurricular programs, and to engaged parents. These traditions are only possible due to our supportive community and our amazing teachers, staff, parents, and students. Our vision is to GBED, and with the hard work and dedication of all stakeholders, we can continue to create a positive learning environment for all students. We are South Range.
In closing, our dedicated staff continues to support our students, families, and community. We prioritize building strong relationships, and I will remain highly visible and active within our school community. We welcome your input and feedback and encourage you to share your thoughts with us. Please mark your calendars for our first home football game of the season on August 23. Let’s pack the stands and cheer on our team, band, and cheerleaders against Springfield!🏈
Have a fantastic year, Raiders!
Sincerely,
Jarred Zapolnik
Superintendent
South Range Local School District

News for You: Governor DeWine Signs Bill Governing Cell Phones in Schools
Powering Down: District will go "phone free" this fall
Ohio law requires schools and districts to adopt local policies that:
- Emphasize that student cell phone use be as limited as possible during school hours.
- Reduce cell phone-related distractions in classroom settings.
- May permit students to use cell phones or other technological devices for student learning or to monitor or address a health concern.
In the United States, 95% of teens (children ages 13 to 17) have access to smart cell phones. Students, on average, receive 192 alerts per day from their cell phones, about 11 notifications per waking hour, one every five minutes. Cell phones and their applications are designed to catch the attention of students, which is disruptive to both learning and relationships. Even when students don’t check their cell phones, the presence of a phone impacts their ability to think. Because of this, many Ohio schools have policies that eliminate student phone use during school hours. Schools that have successfully implemented policies prohibiting the use of cell phones report that students are talking, interacting, laughing, and enjoying themselves. Research demonstrates these policies reduce bullying frequency, especially among students ages 13-16. They similarly have positive and significant impacts on standardized test scores and grade point averages of girls.
Without access to cell phones, students can focus on the present, the people around them, and their education. Without the disruption of cell phones, school staff can spend more time teaching and supporting students. “Our school children currently face countless distractions every day from the devices in their pockets,” said Governor DeWine. “By limiting these distractions, we will re-establish the opportunity for students across Ohio to immerse themselves in their classwork, learn from their teachers, and create lifelong memories with their closest friends.” Schools will be required to adopt their cell phone policies no later than July 2025, ahead of the 2025-2026 school year.
The goal: Less distractions for all Raiders!
📵South Range Local School District will be phone free📵
The 2024-2025 school year will be free from cell phone distractions as the district focuses on BOE policy enforcement. Throughout the year, the South Range Local Schools will collaborate with local and state leadership to review or revise the current cell phone policy ensuring it is aligned with state law. We use the guidance from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce to revise and/or adopt a district policy implementing phone free schools.
Beginning on the first day of classes, the district plans to enforce the current policy that restricts the use of cell phones during the school day. In recent years, students were permitted to use their devices between classes and at lunch; however, they are now limited to before and after school.
The policy includes exceptions for students who require a cell phone to monitor a health concern or for student learning as determined by school officials. Office personnel will relay emergency messages to students when needed.
📵For the 2024-2025 school year, our district will enforce our current policy, which is located below.
South Range Local Board Of Education Cell Phone Policy: 5136 - PERSONAL COMMUNICATION DEVICES
“While students may possess PCDs in school, on school property, during after school activities (e.g., extra-curricular activities) and at school-related functions, they must be powered completely off (i.e., not just placed into vibrate or silent mode) and stored out of sight during school hours during after school activities (e.g., extra-curricular activities), and on school buses or other Board-provided vehicles".
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
Question: What does this mean for our K-12 students?
Answer: There will be no phones during the school day in the K-12 complex. Cell phones will be permitted before and after school. They are to be powered off and placed away in book bags and/or lockers.
Theme for the Year: Get Better Every Day (GBED)!
Did you know...? Why Daily Attendance Matters:
Missed Lessons = Falling Behind: Even one day can mean missing critical instructions and activities, making it harder for your child to catch up.
Impact on Future Success: Consistent attendance is a strong predictor of academic achievement and future opportunities.
Building Resilience: Regular attendance teaches your child the value of perseverance and responsibility—essential skills for success in life.
Stronger Friendships: Daily presence helps your child develop and sustain friendships, which are crucial for emotional and social development.
Healthy Routine: Attending school every day establishes a stable routine, promoting better mental and physical health.

👮🏻♂️News from Officer Hassey, SRLSD School Resource Officer (SRO) 👮🏻♂️
From everyone at Beaver Township Police, welcome back to South Range! I am Officer Matthew Hassey, the full-time School Resource Officer for the campus. Officer Carl Frost will be on campus as well this year. We are both looking forward to the start of school and being a part of the Raider family.
Training and planning have been ongoing throughout the summer to make the safety and security of the South Range campus even better. Even with all the training and planning going on, I want to recognize the most important person who makes South Range a safe campus. It’s YOU! Everyone one of you plays a role in making South Range a safe and secure campus for our students, teachers, and administrators.
This year, with the support of the Ohio School Safety Center, the anonymous school safety tip line will be a big push into this school year. I want every student and parent to know they have a voice if ANY concern comes up. Information will be distributed to each student during the open house events, schedule pick-ups, and posted throughout the school and on the South Range School website. The anonymous information is sent to myself, the State of Ohio School Safety Center, the Superintendent, as well as to the respective principal for where the concern is. The information can be sent by phone call or text message. The number is...
844-723-3764
Please know that I am also available to talk with anyone about safety and security concerns on campus. Call any of the buildings to transfer me to my office or call me directly at 330-507-7359.
Finally, in the morning during Middle and High School drop off, we are asking that no students be dropped off in the High School student parking lot. The amount of traffic between students parking to get to class, vehicles stopping to let their children out of the vehicle, vehicles driving through the parking lot to access other parts of the campus, creates a chaotic and dangerous scenario for our students to be exposed to. Signs will be posted at each student parking lot entrance as a reminder.
Other safety improvements are in the works and will be implemented soon. I’m excited to get this school year underway and see all the amazing things our Raiders achieve this year.
🚗 Elementary School Car Rider A.M. Drop-off & P.M. Pick-up Procedures 🚙
Morning drop-off
- Cars can pull into the elementary parking lot from Route 46 or Green Beaver Road.
- Parents may pull up in a single file line against the curb and drop their children off anytime before the doors open at 7:40 am. If parents want to walk their children up to the doors, they may park in the inner or outer loop; please use the crosswalk to walk from the parking lot to the elementary doors.
- The doors remain open until 7:55, which is when the doors are closed and locked and the students are considered tardy if they arrive after 7:55.
After school pick-up
- Elementary students who are car riders are dismissed from their classrooms at 2:25 pm. Parents picking up their children after school must enter the inner loop of the elementary school parking lot from Green Beaver Road. Cars should form a single file line against the curb next to the numbered spots.
- All cars should have a sign in their passenger window and on their dashboard with their child's first and last name. Parents should remain in their cars as the elementary staff will dismiss the students to their cars in a quick, organized manner.
