A. MacArthur Barr Mission Statement
Preparing and inspiring students to apply learning in a changing, complex, and interdependent world.
Curriculum & Instruction
Ms. Glenn's class kicked off October with a Spooky Ghost decimal sort.
In a lab called “Connecting the Spheres,” students make observations in the Mindful Garden and make conclusions about how lithosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere are all connected. In addition, they focus on the hydrosphere and take a sample of pond water and analyze the temperature, pH, and water turbidity to determine if the pond’s quality is good enough for the fish (biosphere) to survive. Conclusions were drawn that the pond and fish are well taken care of.
Mrs. Dougherty and a group of 5th graders take advantage of Barr's all new reading nooks. She worked with the group of students on morphemes during guided reading. This combination of physical movement connected to sounds helps develop decoding skills.
Emma, Paul and Timur debate point of view and if Kenny Roger's song met the criteria to be considered a narrative.
Ms. Maucione's 7th grade class using counters and number lines to develop conceptual understanding of adding integers.
A group of students designed a new game "Trienga" and are collaborating to manage roles and responsibilities as they move the product from design to production to finished product. We are excited to play the final game in the Mindful garden once launched
Extra Curriculars & Adventures at Barr
Girl's tennis is off to a great season! The team of 10 is led by 4 returning 8th graders, 5 new 7th graders and 1 new 8th grader.
The first meeting of the Better Together Club met during lunch with Andrea Winograd and Virgina Nortfleet. Better Together is a club open to all students in grades 5-8. They focus on strengthening community ties, honoring personal histories, and appreciating diversity so students learn to become empowered, empathetic, and connected. The club extends classroom learning by fostering a safe space for students to share their experiences, build connections and celebrate the belief that we are Better Together. Students began by creating a diversity passport where they celebrated their heritage. Students shared out information about themselves during the meeting.
