Back to School: Parent Involvement is Key
Parent engagement is a key component of making schools a healthy and supportive place. It is a shared responsibility of both school staff and families:
- School staff are committed to making families feel welcomed and engaged in a variety of ways to maintain their involvement, such as through emails, phone calls, or meetings to discuss grades, behavior, and accomplishments.
- Families are committed to actively supporting their child’s learning and development.
What parents can do:
- Become part of the decision-making process in schools.
- Ask the school to provide educational opportunities for parents.
- Talk with your children about health-related behaviors.
- Set goals with your child’s school or teacher for building strong, positive relationships with peers and adults who can support their emotional well-being.
Back-to-school season is an ideal time for parents to reinforce behaviors that help reduce the effects of stressful life events and teach children the skills to overcome them so they can reach their full potential. Access our parent tip sheet for more information on working with your child’s school to create a healthy and supportive environment.
A Message from Seth Larbi (Onward We Learn)
Hi all,
I hope everyone's school year is off to a good start! I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself as the school's newest resource. I'm Seth Larbi, Shea's new Onward We Learn advisor. I've attached an introduction for any faculty/staff member interested in the quick read to get to know me and why I'm here at the school.
Student Meetings
I wanted everyone to know that I have a specific small caseload at the school. However, I can dedicate some time to working with students outside my caseload that may need help with their post-secondary decisions. Feel free to share my email address with your seniors that may have college questions, or they can book an appointment using this link: https://calendly.com/sheaowl/30min.
If a student books an appointment, I will email you to confirm that they are allowed to miss class and are responsible for recovering the information they missed from instruction that day.
Additional Resource
Understanding that I'm only in the building on Tuesdays and Thursdays with appointment priority given to students on my caseload, I have a virtual advising office that your students can access for college and career advising that I will gladly present to any class/advisory that asks!
I hope you all have a great day, and don't hesitate to reach out with any questions!
Best,
Seth Larbi
