DEAD ZONES
Human Dependence Project by Madison Plotner
Main Issues and Negative Effects.
Main Regions in North America Affected
There are several dead zones in and around North America, but the most well known one is in the Gulf of Mexico. It is 8,500 square miles. Other widely known ones are along the coast of Oregon and Virginia.
Effects on Wildlife
Ocean dead zones effect the marine wildlife in the ocean affected. When a body of water becomes a dead zone, the oxygen in the water is reduced, causing the marine wildlife to die due to lack of oxygen.
Effects on League City
Ocean dead zones do not affect League City directly, but it capable that a water source around us is a dead zone. Like the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico, it is not in League City, but it is near it.
Effects on People
Since dead zones kill marine life, this causes a decrease in fish and other animals that we eat. So yes, dead zones do effect people. They reduce our food source.
What Causes Dead Zones
A dead zone is a body of water that does not have enough oxygen to support marine life. When excess chemical nutrients are dropped into the ocean, which makes unneeded algae grow and take up all the oxygen in the water, leading to a dead zone.
Solutions or Preventing?
Dead zones can be reversed if their cause is taken away or reduced. If industrial and agricultural industries around waters or current dead zones were moved or their production was reduced then dead zones could be prevented and eliminated.
