She Looks Like a Cardiologist Virtual Event
You’re Invited!
What
She Looks Like a Cardiologist: Developing Pathways for High School Girls to Pursue a Career in Cardiology, a free virtual event offered by the MidWest Women in Cardiology Alliance.
Who
This event is intended to inspire female high school juniors and seniors with an interest in science, research, or medicine to consider the exciting field of Cardiology.
When
This event will stream live on Saturday, February 27, 2021, from 10:30 am-1:00 pm (EST).
Background
Cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of all Americans, and we need bright, talented, and motivated young minds to join us in addressing this issue for future generations. Our research shows that while ~50% of medical students are female, only a small fraction of these women chooses to specialize in Cardiology. The MidWest Women in Cardiology Alliance wants to show you what life is like as a female cardiologist in the hopes that one day you, too, will #ChooseCardiology.
Video Introduction
A brief introduction to the She Looks Like a Cardiologist program can be seen via the following link:
Program Content & Why You Should Participate
The program will cover sub-specialties within Cardiology including General Cardiology, Cardiac Imaging, Interventional Cardiology, Electrophysiology, and Advanced Heart Failure. We will have female cardiologists from Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin participating in live Q&A sessions. This will be a great opportunity to connect with mentors in your area.

Credit-Bearing Opportunities Outside of the MMSD High School Classroom
The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) wants to support students in accessing additional learning experiences of interest, outside of the coursework that students engage within their high school classrooms. To that end, MMSD offers a number of additional opportunities that support experiential learning, individual research, early access to college credit, and service learning. Information about each of these programs is provided below.
We also want to be clear that the opportunities listed below represent all of the MMSD board-approved options for earning high school credit, outside of what is earned through classroom-based coursework (see MMSD Board Policy #3450). While we encourage students to take advantage of the wide variety of educational enrichment opportunities available to them, (through online programs, summer study programs, language camps, leadership development camps, etc), we also recognize that many of these programs are fee-based and thus may be inaccessible to all students and families in our school district. In keeping with our beliefs about educational equity, and in recognition of the rich learning opportunities that are accessible to all through our school-based learning environments and approved partner programs, we will not transcribe courses and credits that are earned outside of courses offered in MMSD or outside the programs listed below.
