A Message From the Superintendent
September 5, 2024
Dear Fremont Community,
To ensure our commitment to uphold safety and security, we are informing the Fremont School community of an incident that occurred involving the middle school.
Late last night, Fremont School District 79 administrators received notification from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office regarding an anonymous tip they received concerning a social media post shared with a group of students. School administrators immediately enacted the District’s threat assessment protocols in partnership with local law enforcement. After the investigation concluded late last night, law enforcement officials determined that there was no evidence of a viable threat to our students and school community. The parents of the students who were directly involved have been contacted. Additionally, the school’s response plan will include counseling, other support services, and disciplinary measures as appropriate. As this situation involves students, we are limited in sharing details. However, know that any potential threats of this nature are treated seriously.
Concerns are understandably elevated on the heels of yesterday’s tragic event at a high school in Georgia. With that, we are grateful that our school community felt empowered to come forward and swiftly report a safety concern. Please encourage the “see something, say something” actions with your own families. This is critical in maintaining a culture of safety and will be reiterated with our middle school students. The procedures we have in place allow us to act swiftly and comprehensively due to our collaborative partnership with law enforcement officials.
As a reminder, we have numerous resources available to our students who may need additional support. Our teachers, social workers, and psychologists are accessible to students and families. We also have a “Text-a-Tip” program for our middle school students, providing access to a live mental health counselor within minutes of an initial text. Younger students have access to the FSD79 Student Tip Line to report concerns.
Our commitment to maintaining a safe, secure, and healthy school environment grows stronger when we work together, as evidenced in this most recent situation. Thank you for your continued partnership and support.
Sincerely,
Trisha Kocanda
