PSSA INFORMATION
The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires all school districts to administer PSSA testing for the 2023-24 school year. The Pennsylvania System of School Assessment is aligned with the PA Standards. The English Language Arts and Mathematics PSSAs are administered in grades 3 through 8 and the Science PSSA is administered in grade 4 and grade 8.
The specific dates for the English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science Assessment are listed below:
- April 22nd, 24th, & 25th: English Language Arts for grades 3-6
- April 29th & 30th: Mathematics for grades 3-6
- May 1st AM & PM: Science for grade 4
Students learn all skills, concepts, and content necessary to take the assessment within their daily reading, writing, mathematics, and science instruction. These assessments are critically important; please encourage your child to do their best. The results will be one of the measures we use as we make curricular updates and revisions. Individual performance will be one of the factors we consider when determining which students need additional support or enrichment. The data will help the district plan support for students who are not meeting the expectation of proficient on the exam.
A parent/guardian may choose to exempt their child from participating in the exam(s) if the tested content is found to be in conflict with their religious beliefs as per PA Code 22, Chapter 4.4. To exclude your child from taking one or more Keystone Exam(s), a parent/guardian must complete the following actions required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).
1. Email the School Assessment Coordinator. For our school, please e-mail Mr. Ortman (sortman@cbsd.org) to request an appointment to view the exam(s) to determine if they conflict with your religious beliefs.
2. Report to Gayman at the appointed time and sign the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Confidentiality Agreement prior to viewing the exams.
3. Write a letter to the Superintendent of Schools for Central Bucks School District, Dr. Jim Scanlon, stating the specific exam(s) you want your child exempt from for religious reasons. Submit the letter to Mr. Ortman (sortman@cbsd.org)
More information about this state exam can be found on the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Website.
STUDENT PLACEMENT 2024-2025
Over the next few months, we will begin the process of assigning students to an appropriate class for next year. In putting together the classes, we will take into consideration many factors: academic ability, behavioral characteristics, talents, personalities, emotional needs and learning styles. Our goal is to ensure that each child is in a class that has an appropriate balance of students with the proper teacher. We assess each child's individual needs based upon input from the present classroom teacher, student support counselor, reading specialist, and principal.
Class placement is made after reviewing a considerable amount of data. If you feel that we would benefit from additional information, you are welcome to send an email directly to me at sortman@cbsd.org by May 1st. Consider describing a classroom environment that would be beneficial to your son/daughter. In addition, share any information regarding academic, social or emotional information that you would like us to consider. You should not name a specific teacher. District staffing is not complete until June and teaching assignments may change. While parents are welcome to name a few close friends to be placed with their child, there is no guarantee that any of those students will be assigned to the same classroom. Please use this opportunity to speak to your child's strengths and needs. Please note: requests for specific teachers, or requesting the gender of the teacher, will not be considered.
Knowing that children's strengths and needs, as well as friendships, vary from year to year, all previous year's requests are not considered. If there is information that was previously requested, that you would like noted for the 2024-2025 school year, use this opportunity to restate that information.
We want what is best for your child and that involves them having a wide variety of educational experiences. You are not required to send an email; however I welcome your input. Parents will learn of class placement in August. Emails sent after May 1st will not be considered.
Thank you,
Shawn Ortman
