Grade 11 College and Career Trip to GCC
Good afternoon students and parents/guardians,
I wanted to follow up on this week's field trip to GCC, where Juniors attended workshops around Career Pathways, Training Programs, and had an opportunity to experience ZSpace, a virtual reality tool that allowed us to look inside a heart and feel the actual heartbeat through a pen (amongst other things).

GCC staff took students on a tour of their facilities, highlighting important places such as the library, tutoring center, wellness center, bookstore, and student activities office. I advised students to visit these same locations during their own college visits (a reminder that next week is a perfect time to visit schools, check out the college websites for more information).
Grade 7 & 8 Career Morning: April 12th
Earlier today, during exploratory block, students in grades 7 & 8 were able to meet and ask questions to community members working in a variety of different jobs. These included: Police, EMT, Vet Tech, Nurse, Architect, Fire Fighter, Engineering, Theatre & Construction. A huge thanks to our community members who gave up their time to talk with MTRS students!
Please let us know if you might be interested in giving up 60 minutes of your time to talk with students about possible careers in the future!
Huge thanks to Ms Ruggeri for organizing the event
Students talked with law enforcement
Students planned a new school with an architect
Students also looked at what a career in engineering might look like

FRCOG CPR and First Aid classes at MTRS in May
On Thurs 5/2 and 5/9, community CPR and first aid classes will be offered. If you need to re-certify your CPR credentials, or bolster your confidence on how to respond in an emergency, these classes are for you! Participants will leave each class with a nationally-recognized certification.
The classes will be deeply discounted ($20/class, $30/both classes), thanks to a grant secured by Cooperative Public Health Service, the health district that supports all West County Boards of Health.
Students can receive an additional discount by using the following codes: STUDENT_CPR (for $10 CPR class), STUDENT_FIRSTAID (for $10 first aid class) or STUDENT_COMBINED (to take both classes for $15).
While these classes will take place at Mohawk Trail Regional School, this is NOT a school-sponsored activity.

Restorative Practices training, Part 2
Earlier this week, thanks to our Barr Foundation grant, fourteen teachers and administration staff took place in a two day training course delivered by trainers from Suffolk University Centre for Restorative Justice. This was a follow up to the introduction to RJ practices from two weeks ago. It is the second step in our comprehensive plan to start to roll out RJ practices across the district as a whole. In early April, the same group will experience Tier 3 RJ training in August.
In the next few months teachers, admin, students and family members will have the opportunity to participate in similar trainings as a way to infuse restorative practices into MTRS and our district as a whole.

Much Ado About the Eclipse
Our district elementary schools hosted eclipse viewing opportunities. See the photos of the school communities in action on Monday, April 8th on that perfect solar eclipse viewing day.
One cool related event was that Third grade students at Hawlemont School in Charlemont were treated to a special guest visit on the previous Friday. Western Mass News Meteorologist Liam Murphy spent time with the students discussing how he predicts the weather and answered many questions about the solar eclipse, among others. This visit coupled with the solar eclipse event helped students to understand the link between what they are learning and what’s happening in the world.
Thanks to staff, families, individuals and groups who made this day special for our students to experience this (almost) once in a lifetime opportunity.
6th Grade Events: MFA TODAY and Follow Up On the Ice Cream Social
This morning around 7:30, buses left MTRS carrying 6th graders from across the districts to Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. Not only is this trip related to current curriculum, it is another opportunity for 6th grade students from across the districts to interact before coming up to the middle school in the fall.
By the way, the 6th grade Ice Cream Social at MTRS was a sweet success. Thanks to everyone who attended to hear more about what to expect as their student moves into 7th grade at the Mohawk Trail Regional middle school.
The bowls of ice cream were huge and toppings were plentiful. (Yum!) Thanks to the 7th grade team for scooping and then providing a full overview to 6th graders and their family members in the packed library. Thanks, also, to the parent ambassadors who made themselves available to attendees.
If you have thought of other things you'd like to know, or weren't able to attend, don't hesitate to contact middle school guidance counselor Taffy Ruggeri at truggeri@mtrsd.org.

Brennan Tierney named most promising new teacher!
The Massachusetts Council for Social Studies is proud to announce that Brennan Tierney has been selected to receive the Richard Aieta Award for Promising New Teacher.
The letter and supporting materials submitted by his colleagues on Brennan’s behalf describe an accomplished and inspiring educator. Amidst a remarkably strong field of candidates, Brennan’s talents and contributions to his students and school stood out.
Each year the Massachusetts Council for the Social Studies presents Awards of Excellence in a variety of social studies areas to educators from across the Commonwealth. Teachers, administrators, and museum educators at all levels are eligible for recognition. Named in memory of Richard Aieta, an extraordinary social studies educator who provided training for pre-service teachers at the college level and worked on behalf of MCSS, the Promising New Teacher Award is presented to an individual in the first five years of their career.
This award is also a recognition of the support your district provides for social studies teachers and the civic education of your students. Congratulations. We are thrilled to recognize Brennan’s excellence with this award.
