Dear ChurchillCSD Families & Staff,
Happy Presidents' Day!
Today, we honor the legacy of our nation's leaders, particularly George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, whose birthdays originally marked this day of celebration. Over time, Presidents' Day has become an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of all U.S. presidents and the values they’ve upheld, including leadership, resilience, and dedication to our democracy.
We hope you’re enjoying this special day and had a restful 4-day weekend. As we welcome students and staff back tomorrow, and head into the week, let’s take it by storm and make it a great one. Wishing you all an incredible 4-day week ahead!
Regards,
Derild Parsons

Attendance Reminder for Families ✅
We'd like to emphasize our attendance policies and procedures.
ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES
EXCUSED does not equal EXEMPT! (State Law NRS 392.130)
Please note that any absence not excused by a medical/mental health professional or a school administrator will be counted against the student's attendance as per Nevada state attendance law.
Any absence that goes unreported by the parent will default to a truancy after three days.
Excused = NOT EXEMPT (counted against student's attendance).
Exempt = Medical Professional note provided or School Admin Excused (not counted against student attendance).
Notification: Schools may notify families of any concerning patterns associated with excessive absences; including but not limited to notes home, School Attendance Review Board (SARB) warnings, pre-SARB notices, and SARB attendance contracts.
Message from our Partners at Care Solace 💜
February is Teen Dating Violence and Prevention Awareness Month. As a school community, let's stay informed about the signs of teen dating violence and know where to turn if you suspect yourself, a friend, or a family member is experiencing dating violence.
There are many forms of violence to be aware of:
- Physical abuse: Unwanted and intentional contact with someone's body or something close to their body with the intent to harm.
- Emotional and verbal abuse: Non-physical behavior such as threats, insults, humiliation, intimidation, isolation, or social media monitoring.
- Sexual abuse: Force or coercion to perform unwanted sexual acts.
- Digital abuse: Using social media or texting to intimidate, stalk, or harass someone.
- Stalking: When someone follows you or harasses you, causing fear and uncertainty.
According to George Mason University, one in three teens in the United States will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse from someone they are in a relationship with before they are 18. Most commonly, someone who is experiencing teen dating violence is unlikely to tell anyone, so it’s important to be aware of the warning signs.
Signs Someone May Be Experiencing Teen Dating Violence:
- Being insulted, intimidated, or humiliated by their partner
- Experiencing extreme jealousy, insecurity, or controlling behavior from their partner
- Feeling isolated from friends and family due to their partner's influence
- Being subjected to unwanted sexual contact of any kind
- Dealing with a partner's explosive temper or unusual mood swings
- Having their social media activities or location constantly monitored by their partner
- Experiencing invasions of privacy, such as their partner showing up unannounced
- Receiving unwanted items, gifts, or flowers from their partner
- Witnessing their partner abusing alcohol or drugs
- Being threatened or physically harmed, such as receiving scratches or bruises
For more information on types of abuse, you can visit loveisrespect.org.
It’s important to be aware of signs someone may be a victim of dating abuse. If you have a friend you suspect is experiencing signs of abuse, here are some tips on how you can help them:
- Reach out to them and ask if they need help or support. Ensure they’re safe when communicating your concerns, and let them know you are there for them when they need someone.
- Listen to them. Let them share their story and remind them it’s not their fault.
- Tell a trusted adult. Sometimes, looking out for your friend means letting an adult know something is wrong and allowing them to step in and help.
If you, a friend, or a family member is experiencing abuse, here are resources available to Churchill County School District.

Missing School for Illness?
Please remember to call your child’s school every day that they miss school due to an illness so the office staff can excuse them.
REMINDER - EXCUSED does not equal EXEMPT (State Law NRS 392.130). Any absence not excused by a medical professional will be counted against the student's attendance as per Nevada state attendance law.
Excused = NOT EXEMPT (counted against student's attendance).
Exempt = Medical Professional note provided (not counted against student attendance).
LICE
We are all excited to be back at school! As we encourage children to learn and share, they also share things we don't want them to: Head Lice! We start seeing a lot of lice outbreaks at our schools this time of year. Please click the link below to learn how to identify lice and for information on what you can do if lice hits your home.
Bed Bugs
Winter seasonal changes bring about infestations and household inconveniences.
Bed bugs are a nuisance, but they are not known to cause or spread disease. They are usually
active at night and can irritate the human skin. The bite is initially painless, but it may become
swollen and itch, much like a mosquito bite.
The source of bed bugs often cannot be determined, as they may be found in many places,
including hotels, hospitals, theaters and schools. Finding a bed bug does not mean that the
building is infested. Adults & children can unknowingly bring bed bugs into buildings,
including schools. In response to this seasonal concern, Churchill County School District
continually works to identify pests, provide inspections of schools and have licensed pest
control specialists treat classrooms and schools as appropriate.
If you have experienced bedbugs in your home, we strongly recommend seeking professional
assistance from a qualified pest control company. If your child has any bites, you should contact your health care provider.
Further information on preventing bed bugs are available on the following website.

Weekly School Highlights 🎉
Churchill County High School 💚🌊
On Saturday, February 8, the JROTC Color Guard and Unarmed Drill Teams had the opportunity to compete in the ALL Navy Area-22 Drill competition at Carson City High School. It had been years since the CCHS JROTC program last competed, making this a great chance for the cadets to showcase their precision and discipline. Despite the challenges, the cadets demonstrated their commitment to the program and the competition by training rigorously for several weeks. Their instructor, Master Chief James Walker, acknowledged the road ahead but expressed pride in their dedication and progress this year. Aside from the competition, the CCHS JROTC cadets also stepped up to support the community, volunteering at a local youth wrestling tournament at Rafter 3C Arena on Saturday, January 25, and Sunday, January 26. Sophomore James Lofthouse demonstrated his leadership skills by managing the volunteer team for the event. With continued focus, the JROTC program looks ahead to upcoming drill and drone competitions across Northern Nevada. Bravo Zulu to all the cadets for their hard work and commitment to the program and the community.

Students in Trudy Mills’ class studied matter in their science unit last week. They learned about the physical, measurable, and testable properties of matter. As an activity, they moved through six science stations. At each station, they had to work with their group using communication and critical thinking skills to separate mixtures based on the properties of matter. Some stations separated objects based on physical properties such as size, shape, and color. Other stations included separating mixtures based on their properties such as magnetism and buoyancy. Students even separated trail mix properties and then got to eat it. At each station, students recorded their procedure in their science journals and then participated in a class discussion regarding their findings to complete the unit. Mills likes to give students hands-on science experiences whenever possible. It helps to solidify their previous knowledge and makes science come alive for them.

Students in Monica Franks’ Kindergarten class learned about kindness. Students started the week learning about polar bears, and discovering what makes the animals so special. Then students jumped into focusing on random acts of kindness and practiced ways to make their classroom a positive and caring place. To wrap up the week, students celebrated Valentine's Day with a party that included treats, heartfelt notes, and goodies for their friends spreading kindness in the classroom.
