Maize Middle School
A Message From Principal Mrs. Marney Hay
We are quickly approaching the end of the 3rd quarter. Lots of information has been sent out about enrollment for 7th and 8th graders. Counselors from Maize Middle School and Maize High School have been working with students to help them as they choose classes for next year. If you have any questions please reach out to the counselors for support.
We have seen an influx of students trying to order Door Dash and Uber Eats. Friendly reminder that per the Maize USD 266 Student Handbook section 17.3:
"Deliveries for students, including flower and balloon bouquets, will not be accepted at any of the schools. Deliveries made by outside restaurants or food delivery services will not be accepted. Parents may deliver items to their own student only if prior arrangements have been made with administration."
State Assessments will be occurring in April. It is important that students are present on testing days. The Science State Assessment for 8th grade will be April 3rd and 4th. 7th grade students do not take the Science Assessment this year. The ELA State Assessment for 7th and 8th grade will be April 10th and 11th. The Math State Assessment for 7th and 8th grade will be April 13th and 14th. Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep, eats a healthy breakfast and is on time to school.
Check out the Maize Middle School drop-off and pick-up video created by OneMaize Media. For pick up at the end of the day, please make sure to park in designated parking spots, keep speed low and watch for students. Students that are waiting for rides at the end of the day should wait in the main entrance area by the office and commons. We appreciate your help with safety for pick up and drop off.

Nurse Notes
Hello Maize Families!
Just a friendly reminder that if you would like your student to be included in the Free Grace Med Dental Screening being held at Maize High School on 4-11-23, please contact me! I can get you the forms that need to be completed. Forms are due by 4-4-23.
We have completed our vision and hearing screenings for all 7th graders. Ask your student how they did! If you have any questions, please let me know!
As always- if your child has a health need or a change in health status. Please let me know! It is so helpful when we can be proactive.
Please do NOT send medication to school with your student. All medication needs to go through the Health Office for safety reasons. Emergency inhalers or Epi Pens that have Dr. orders to carry are the exception. All meds need to be in their original containers- no baggies please!!

PTO has been able to spend approximately $5,000 on necessary supplies, upgrades and needs for Maize Middle School! We look forward to funding even more requests through the end of the school year.
Thank you to everyone who donated or provided snacks and drinks for the conference day. Our staff loved it all!
Spiritwear will be delivered to 5th hour classes the week of March 6th-10th. We are excited to see everyone rocking some awesome new eagle swag!

A Note From The Counselors
Future 8th Grade Enrollment:
Can you believe it's time for 8th grade enrollment? On Thursday, February 16th, Maize Middle School Counselors met with 7th grade students during English Language Arts to discuss course options and enrollment information. Beginning now through March 3rd, enrollment is open on Skyward! Instructions to enroll are attached via this link.
Students should enroll in 3 semesters of choice electives and 3 semesters of alternates. Please ensure that you work alongside your student when selecting elective options as changes are not guaranteed after enrollment has been submitted.
If you have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to the school counseling office.
Coping Skills:
Many of our students struggle with stress management and identifying positive coping strategies to address big emotions. Unhealthy coping skills can sometimes take hold and students turn to self-harm, drugs, alcohol, isolation, etc. This article provides some information on student stress including positive coping strategies.

2023 Summer Driver Education
Enrollment Information and Mandatory Parent/Student Meeting
USD 266 Maize Schools will once again offer summer driver education. Any student who turns 14 on or before Thursday, June 1, 2023 and has or will graduate 8th grade by June 1st will be eligible to enroll in summer driver education.
Students will have 31 days (April 12th - May 12th) to complete the coursework online through Google Classroom. Students failing to complete the online portion by May 12th will be dropped from the class and forfeit the $200 enrollment fee. Students will also complete at least five, one hour driving sessions starting no earlier than May 30th (schedule to be determined after class begins). We prefer that students get an instructional permit at the DMV in advance of the class and spend as much time as possible driving in safe locations with their parents. Practicing with parents before class starts is a plus considering that driver education is only five hours of driving.
Enrollment will be offered on a first come, first serve basis with enrollment limited to the first 150 students to register. Enrollment registration will open at 8:00 AM on Monday, April 3, 2023 and will close on Monday, April 10, 2023 or when enrollment capacity has been reached. Please enroll early as the class will fill up fast. To register go to https://forms.gle/3ySnBoDJos1bdieB8 (form not accessible until April 3rd at 8 AM).
Kay Club Unit Conference
Almost 150 middle and high school students attended the Kay Club Unit Conference hosted by Maize Middle School and around 40 adults from 16 different area schools.
Coralynn Allen, club President, and Eli Smith, Vice President, have been KAY members the last three years and all of their leadership training paid off. They both got up on stage and spoke numerous times in front of the crowd.
All of the KAY members represented our school well from set up, to greeting schools, to the final clean up. I’m so proud of these kids.
Be sure and pat them all on the back for pulling off this amazing event!

Grade Checks
OTI Grade Checks
Weekly grade checks will continue for all student-athletes. If any student-athlete has an F when grade checks are conducted on Fridays, they will be given an "Opportunity to Improve" sheet that lists the class and teacher of the class(es) they are failing. Students will have the opportunity to stay eligible for the following week and work to get all their grades to passing. If on Friday the following week they are still failing a class, student-athletes will be ineligible for the following week and will not be allowed to participate in competitions for the week.
Please contact Mr. Hamilton with any questions regarding this policy.
