2nd Grade
A Note from the Teacher:
It’s hard to believe that Christmas time is approaching so quickly! We have some fun activities planned for the month of December. We enjoyed putting on the program for our local Veterans in November. The students all did such a great job! We also enjoyed a special treat from Ms. Simons who read “The Popcorn Book” to us which explains the history of popcorn and then she made popcorn for us!
What We Are Learning:
ELA: We will be working on sequencing the order of events in a story, rereading, asking questions, synonyms and antonyms, compound words, contractions, and in spelling we will start to focus on vowel teams (like ay, ay, oi, oy, etc.).
Writing: We are learning how to write paragraphs and making our writing stronger by adding more detail. Soon we will be working on opinion writing.
Math: Subtracting 2-digit numbers up to 100 with and without regrouping will be our focus in December. Then we will get more practice solving problems with addition and subtraction.
Science/Social Studies: We finished up our science unit studying the work of water where we learned about erosion and how to stop it. Next up in Social Studies we will be learning about economics.
Dates to Know:
- Christmas Program: Friday, December 13th at 6:00 pm in the school gym.
- Classroom Christmas Party: Friday, December 20th (a note will be coming home about this soon).
- Christmas Break: Begins on Monday, December 23rd through Friday, January 3rd. School will resume on Monday, January 6th.
Reminders:
- Student planners go home every Monday with upcoming events for the week listed.
- Library is on Wednesday, so please have books returned by then.
- P.E. is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays so please make sure your child has some shoes that they can run and play in. You are welcome to have them leave a pair of tennis shoes at the school for P.E. These also work great for inside shoes, just in case their outside shoes have gotten wet or muddy.
- Students will have a spelling test every Friday unless otherwise noted.
- Reading logs are due every Friday.

First Diary
My daughter, Meg became really interested in reading when I started writing down her thoughts in a diary.
Some days, I’d write down what she said about school or our funny kitten. Other times, I’d ask her questions and write the answers. “What made you laugh today?” “Tell me about your best friend,”
When a page was finished, I’d read it to her. Boy, did she ever listen! I loved seeing Meg pull out her diary and “read” it to her dad. She was so proud! 💗
Take them along
Our family has gotten into the habit of taking books with us whenever we go out. When we have to wait at places like the doctor’s office, we have something special to do. Reading seems to magically soothe my children when they’re impatient or nervous. 💗
