November Newsletter
Letter from the Head of School
by Kara Lawler
Dear Parents,
November is upon us, and it is hard to believe! Even as it’s been unseasonably warm, I know the crisp air will soon be here. The leaves are falling, and the days are getting shorter. I know some people dread the time change, but there is something about the earlier night fall that calls us all to rest. I’m reminded of this quote from e.e. cummings, “Peering from some high window, at the gold of November sunset and feeling that if day has to become night, this is a beautiful way.” November brings its own sense of beauty and spirit of reverence that I have come to treasure.
In the United States, November represents a month of showing gratitude and thanksgiving for and with our family and friends. In the spirit of that tradition, I thank you all for spending time with us over Parents’ Weekend. We had a record turnout, with plenty of fall fun for everyone! Please find the weekend’s pictures, linked below. It was a great weekend, and we are grateful that you spent it with us.
As always, we have much to be thankful for here at Grier. This month is packed—not only with academics and athletics, but with so many special events! We have our first-ever Homecoming Fox Trot, proceeded the night before by an all-school bonfire, complete with traditional Grier songs and chants! Our fall play is November 15 and 16, and the Gala is on November 22-24. We celebrate Friendsgiving on the 27th, before many of our students depart for Thanksgiving break. Of course, many Grier girls stay with us over this break, and we host a traditional, family-style Thanksgiving dinner, complete with all the fixings!
We hope the spirit of Thanksgiving finds you where you are. From all of us here at Grier, thank you for sharing your daughters with us. It’s a true gift, and we don’t take it lightly. Happy Thanksgiving!
In gratitude,
Kara

Teacher Talk
By Anthony Lang, Dean of Faculty
With November beginning, the countdown to midterms begins as different courses continue their path towards learning objectives. Although the rigor at Grier School maintains throughout the year, each marking period has one Lab Week, which allows teachers to creatively approach their class content and offer different lessons and activities. Even though October is a busy month at Grier School, including Parents' Weekend, during Lab Week, teachers utilize the block schedule with double periods to do different activities, including complete full lab experiments in Science classes. Some of the different activities that teachers ran with their students covered a variety of ways to help students see content through a different lens and also work in a hands-on way with concepts they have been learning about through the first marking period.
In Mr. Barsody's class, the AP Physics Mechanics class used battery powered cars, each with different levels of battery output, to measure speed and velocity and the effects of gravity using flat and angled surfaces. Students measured out courses on the tile floor and used elevated ramps to create different forces before analyzing and computing the data for the force and change based on their different findings.
In English 9 Honors, students researched Greek Gods and Goddesses and characters from Homer's The Odyssey, and ran their campaigns and presented their political speeches and campaign posters, including their great catch phrases. Many students were decked out in full costumes, embodying the Gods, Goddesses, and characters themselves.
In Principles of Math, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra, Mrs. Mowrer had the students work in groups and construct paper ball courses, in which a ping-pong ball must enter at a starting point, go through curves and slopes, and reach an end point. The entire course was constructed using only a cardboard base and tape and paper, so the students had to work together as they engineered their buildings and also needed to be aware, as the ball must begin at least 10 inches above the ground and finish 1 inch above.
The creativity that Grier School allows teachers to help create their own curriculum and pacing also helps the teachers offer different things to benefit their students and ensure the students approach their learning in different ways. This well-rounded approach helps students grow and face different situations and weaknesses in a way that they learn to problem-solve and adapt, skills which they will use in their lives no matter which direction they go.

Parents' Weekend was the very best ever, and we so enjoyed everyone joining in the fun. Having almost 70% of families partake in our Parents' Weekend festivities made the weekend extra-wonderful. All of our students participating in the dance and music performances, club tables, mini-classes, family outings, hayrides, outdoor Fall Fun, Grier Ambassadors and riding events were the highlights of an extraordinary weekend! Thank you so much for making it just as enjoyable for all of us!
Our fall-themed Dorm Decorating Contest highlighted some awesome creativity, and we awarded six top prizes to our students and faculty. Shout-outs to Mr. Barsody, Stella A, Olivia L, Quinn M, Fernanda S, Alanna R, Avery S & Mom Ruthie!
Some Spooktacular pics below highlight some of our students and faculty’s boo-tiful creativity & Ghoulishly Fang-tastic award winning décor!
Our next Winter Wonderland themed decorating contest will begin soon.
Grier’s annual Halloween Costume Contest brought out some incredible ingenuity, freaky fun, and all-around silliness. Prizes were awarded for the scariest, funniest, most creative, best duo/group, and best faculty costume. Although the judging was grueling, some of the winners (pictured below) were enchanting and spine-tingling.
Along with our exciting dorm activities and dorm wars is the awarding of our coveted trophies to the dorm that prevailed in our games, lost the least deportment points, showed consistent kindness, and averaged the highest overall final deportment score. These coveted trophies will be awarded at the end of each marking period, and we are proud to announce that following a super close race, the first MP’s winners are:
· 7-9th grade – 2nd Floor
· 10-12th grades – Davis/Trustees
Congratulations!
Students are already plotting and planning on how to get the two trophies in their hands even prior to the end of the next Marking Period. Stay tuned!
We have some exciting news! Our very own Kimmy Porter has returned to Grier in the position of Day Student and On-Campus Activity Director.
WELCOME BACK, MRS. PORTER!!
A little added note: Remember Kindness is free, sprinkle that wonderfulness everywhere!
November Events
by Erin Guydish Buchholz, Dean of Students & Belonging
This month, we look forward to bringing the spooky season to a close with our Halloween costume competition, door decorating awards, and annual Trick or Treat night. These sweet events will shift into more sugary celebrations as we approach the end of marking period one and the holiday season. Trips this month range from holiday celebrations to seasonal shopping to opportunities to see sights near and far in Pennsylvania. Additionally, students continue to participate in a variety of community service opportunities aiming for and beyond their required hours.
November will bring celebrations featuring the yearly televised Dog Show on Thanksgiving, the Hanging of the Greens & Gold on campus, and Grier’s own performance capstones- the Fall Play & Gala. Perhaps most excitingly, we will be bringing back Grier’s Homecoming traditions with a bonfire & dance!

Spring Break Trips
Thinking of Spring Break already?! There are a few options for students to enjoy on our Spring Break Trips!
The Florida Fun & Facts Tour features 14 days of fun adventures! Students will experience the magic and excitement of the Disney World Parks over 4 days, getting an opportunity to explore each park! Ride roller coasters, explore the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and more spending 3 days at Universal Orlando Studios! See space shuttles and learn about NASA's missions at the Kennedy Space Center. Visit Florida's Everglades and natural wildlife with a guided Airboat tour. Take in the beautiful and relaxing beaches of Florida with multiple 1 day trip excursions. This trip will cover all activities and excursions our students will be able to enjoy!
The Southern European Adventure introduces students to the world beyond the classroom in an educational experience! Explore Spain, Italy, and France in this 14-day adventure. Twenty students can visit the beautiful cities of Barcelona, Provence, Tuscany, and Rome! Excursions to Vatican City, Pompeii, and Pisa Cathedral. With guides, our students will be able to explore and learn more about beautiful Southern Europe!
The Panama Costa Rica Trip is an excellent opportunity for students to experience the beauty and culture of both Panama and Costa Rica! In both countries students will experience unique cultures and the incredible biodiversity that can only be seen and appreciated in the Central American rain forest. In Panama, students will also visit one of the great engineering accomplishments of man-kind, the Panama Canal. This trip also includes a service component and thus students will receive 12 service hours while enjoying the experience of a life time. Finally, while knowledge of the Spanish language is not necessary, this is an excellent opportunity for students learning Spanish to have an immersive experience. A trip of this kind looks great on a student’s college applications and for the cost it is an amazing deal. The cost of this 14-day trip is $4,928, the price will cover all flights, hotels, transport throughout the trip on a private coach bus, all activities and the services of a full-time local guide.
Senior Class Rings
We are very excited to offer a senior class ring this year! The classic ring features a timeless design, very similar to the class rings our graduates had decades ago. Featuring a genuine jade center, the ring is set in antique gold. With "Grier School" around the bezel, the inside of the ring allows for custom engraving with your daughter's initials and class year. Our motto, Sana Mens in Corpore Sano, is also engraved inside. Please find the information attached with three options for the gold and your customization preferences. Josten's will handle the ordering and payment but reach out to Kara Lawler with any questions. Kara has sizers in her office if students would like to verify ring size.
STEM Center Stage
By Dr. Nancy Burke, Director of STEM Education and Science Dept. Chair
Hello, Grier Community! In this month’s edition of STEM Center Stage, I would like to share information about a STEM class offered at Grier school. That class is engineering! Yes, that’s right! Grier offers a course in engineering for our students. Our engineering course is based upon the curriculum developed through Project Lead the Way, a company that focuses on developing student-centered courses, all with the aim of developing skills that are translatable to future careers. In this class, students use tools such as 3-D modeling software and robotics hardware to solve problems relating to engineering fields such as mechanical engineering, environmental sustainability, and product design. Students begin the year by completing structured activities and advance through the school year to solving open-ended problems and projects. By the end of this full-year course, students will have been exposed to design process, testing, modeling, and project management. Furthermore, students will enhance their ability to problem solve, communicate, work collaboratively, and to write technically. Finally, this course seeks to increase students’ knowledge about STEM careers in fields such as product design, renewable energy, transportation, and compound machines.
This is the third year that the Principles of Engineering course has been offered at Grier School, and we currently have four students enrolled. Our goal is to double that enrollment number in the next several years and thus provide this amazing opportunity to many more Grier Students because GIRLS BELONG IN STEM!
“We will always have STEM with us. Some things will drop out of the public eye and will go away, but there will always be science, engineering, and technology. And there will always, always be mathematics.”
~ Katherine Johnson, NASA researcher and mathematician

Welcome to the Social Institute
Welcome to the Social Institute & Invitation to the First Parent Session
Grier School is excited to begin working with The Social Institute to answer the call for social and wellness concerns amongst our students and in larger global contexts.
According to the CDC report on Youth Risk Behavior, nearly one in three teen girls has seriously considered attempting suicide—a 60% increase from 10 years ago. There are a variety of factors contributing to such a stark increase in these experiences of sadness and violence. However, the same study also found that, “School connectedness, defined in this report as feeling close to people at school, has a long-lasting, protective impact for adolescents well into adulthood.” As part of Grier School’s wellness initiatives, it is imperative that we begin to address the concerns and experiences the CDC is finding among our students.
We have begun a collaboration with The Social Institute to help students become empowered digital citizens. Learning ways to positively engage with technology and social media, find balance and regulation regarding tech time, and learn about the effects, positive and negative, that technology has in communities and on various peoples are foundational steps in raising well-adjusted global citizens.
In order to be impactful in this process, we need your help. The CDC study concluded that, “Supporting schools in efforts to reverse these negative trends [of rising mental health struggles] and ensure that youth have the support they need to be healthy and thrive will require partnership.” While the school can create and implement new curricular and counseling components, guardian support and reinforcement will aid in elevating the usefulness of these program components.
College Counseling Updates
The seniors have made tremendous progress in their applications now that the October 15th and November 1st deadlines have past. They continue to plug away at applications each week as well as at the Sunday workshops. All seniors should be wrapping up their applications before winter break begins.
