Principal's Message
Hello,
We wrapped up a wonderful week of homecoming activities with a huge win over Chamblee and currently sit in first place in the region. I want to thank all of the parents and teachers for their support last week. A special thank you goes out to Mary Ann Nobles and Amanda Lockhart for their continuous commitment to our homecoming activities.
I am a time person and believe that I must always be on time and never want people waiting on me because I’m late. I also try to be organized although that is not a strength, but I’m working on it daily. As an educator, my job is to ensure that there is an environment for teachers to teach and students to learn. Before we get to the teaching and learning part, we must provide a safe and secure environment for this to happen. With this in mind, my administration and myself do not have an option to look the other way when poor decisions are made. The day I feel it necessary to look the other way is also the day it is time to move on from education. We get to have different views on many things, but I can only have the same standard for the safety of your students that I have for my own kids. The standard is the standard, without compromise.
Please be safe and enjoy the break with your students.
Sincerely,
Duane Sprull Ed.D.

Important Information about Gifted Review
Each fall semester, the gifted review team looks at existing student data to discuss student needs and whether students may be evaluated for gifted identification. If you are interested in having the team discuss your child’s needs, you may complete a Recommendation for Review Form, found on the Gifted and Talented Services webpage, and return it to the Gifted & Talented Specialist at your child’s school by Wednesday, October 2. No additional information is needed.
The Gifted & Talented Specialist for Decatur High School is Eleta Andrews. For more detailed information about the review process and to obtain a copy of the Recommendation for Review Form, please contact Eleta Andrews at eandrews@csdecatur.net or visit the Gifted and Talented Services webpage.

🧠 GSU/Emory Neuroscience Students Visits Psychology Classes 🧠
This week our Psychology classes participated in an outreach program with GSU/Emory. Graduate and Phd. Neuroscience Students from GSU and Emory presented to our students about their research and answered questions from our students about neuroscience and the brain. They also brought Human Brains from the Brain Lending Library so that our students could examine and even touch a real human brain, as well as the brains of several other mammals. Our students are currently working on a unit focused on the Brain and Biology of Psychology. Students were presented with an opportunity for some real hands on neuroscience. Students also were invited to consider participation in the ION summer program at GSU for neuroscience.

PTSA News
The PTA Dance Committee would like to extend our gratitude to the DHS community for their support of the 2024 Homecoming Dance. The gym was transformed into a hip venue that reflected the Disco Inferno theme! It was a night to remember as the students danced the night away.
A special thanks to the teacher and parent volunteers who stepped up to ensure a great event for the students. Thank you!
Have a great Fall Break!!!

Lighten the Load for CSD Families
As fall break approaches, we're reminded of how DEF's Lighten the Load program began -- with an elementary school teacher who told us that one of her students dreaded school breaks because he and his siblings counted on having two meals a day at school. Our Lighten the Load program has evolved since then, but we're still committed to helping remove obstacles - like food insecurity - for our kids.
The number of weekend food bags we provide has DOUBLED this year, and we need your help to ensure we're able to continue to meet this need. This is our community, and these are OUR kids. Please consider donating to DEF, or purchasing items from our Lighten the Load wish list today.
DEF Provides Suicide Intervention Training for Anyone Interested!
You probably know that September is Suicide Prevention Month -- but do you know that through Joe’s Fund, DEF’s behavioral health fund, we provide ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) workshops multiple times each year? These two-day workshops are open to ANY CSD staff member or Decatur community member. We held a refresher course just this week, and the next trainings will be: October 10-11, February 27-28, and March 13-14. Help us make Decatur a suicide-safe community - sign up using the QR code.
