December 2021
Message from our President
Hello Fellow Rotarians and Happy Holidays to All
December is upon us. The weather, although not “too frightful” here in the desert, has changed for a while. Time to put on our winter warm wear and celebrate the holidays with family and friends.
The vast majority of us are fortunate to have more than the basics of life - shelter, food and clothing. As Rotarians, we can’t help but think of those in need, locally and around the world. You joined rotary to make a difference and help provide for those who lack some of the basics.
At this current time in our own lives, we are coming out and going back into a life with COVID. December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month. Right here in our own backyards we can’t help but find this month's theme more than pertinent. Yes, by now, we do know what are the correct things to do to prevent or at least minimize COVID - vaccinations, masking, good hand hygiene and being judicious within large groups. Hopefully we all have good healthcare to mitigate this road, but around the world this isn’t the case. Most of the world’s population can’t afford or don’t have access to basic healthcare.
Disease results in misery, pain, political instability, and poverty for millions of people worldwide. That’s why treating and preventing disease is so important to us. We lead efforts both large and small - we set up temporary clinics, blood donation centers, and training facilities in underserved communities struggling with outbreaks and health care access. We design and build infrastructure that allows doctors, patients, and governments to work together. We pay special attention to water and sanitation needs around the world.
Our members combat diseases like malaria, polio, water and sanitation-borne diseases. Prevention is important, which is why we also focus on health education and equip communities to stop the spread of these life-threatening diseases. Rotary International, through your participation directly or indirectly, provide numerous projects and grants here in our backyard and globally.
Getting involved in our club is the second step. You already took the first step, joining . Our club has many opportunities for participation. As the Uncle Sam recruiting ads of days-gone-by, WE NEED YOU to step up.
With Warm and Happy Thoughts,
Brian Brodowsky, President

Allan
Business: J.G. Mechanical
Highlight :Juan's specialty is air conditioning/electrical/home repairs. He is extremely customer friendly, takes time to explain what is needed and why, and goes the extra mile for his customers. We had a water heater go out, and he stopped another project, obtained the water heater and installed it within a matter of a few hours. His prices are reasonable.
Ivan
Business: Farmer in the Dale, which is a family owned local business.
They sell a wide variety of fresh produce and groceries at great prices. Ernesto Draayer and his staff are always friendly and very helpful.
Sam Messler
Business: The UPS Store.
Highlight:For as long as I have known the owners, Floyd Barten and Kent Helser, I've noticed the high quality of customer service they and their staff provide their clientele. Surpassing that, the proprietors treat local non-profit organizations in a most special way with respect for what they do to help others. The UPS Store is a most definite focal point of pride in the City of Desert Hot Springs.

The District 4-WayTest speech competition will be held in late April 2022. We hope to make this a regular event each year. The Vocational part will focus on employment opportunities in various fields. Speech and communication skills are a significant part of jobs for the future. This year the team of mentors include Rotary Club Members Jim and Mary Wilson both of whom have spent careers in education, and Alan Ochsenbein whose career included a large amount of public speaking.Music Competition Committee
For the first time, our club will be sponsoring entrants in Rotary District 5330’s MUSIC COMPETITION (Vocal, Piano, Instrumental), but we cannot do it without you.

December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month
"Disease prevention and treatment is one of the Rotary Foundation Areas of Focus. And for good reason. The health and vitality of a person, a family and a community can be seriously impaired by what in many cases is a preventable disease. Disease prevention is really a keystone to progress in other areas as well because of the interplay with other areas of focus like Water and Sanitation and Maternal & Child Health.
