West Oxford Owl
September 27, 2024
What a wet way to end the week! I hope all of our families stayed safe and dry.
This week we started boot camp for third, fourth, and fifth grade students. We adjusted our school calendar Wednesday in order to start building our stamina and test taking skills in small groups. Students worked hard! We will be doing this once a month.
Fifth grade students took a field trip to Granville County Careers on Wheels event where they had the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of job opportunities, from law enforcement to linemen. They had a great time! Skylar represented our student body at the Superintendent's Advisory Council this week, as the group of students talked about ways to stay safe at school. West Oxford has representatives on the student, parent, teacher, and principal advisory councils, all of which met this week. One of our second grade classes had a parent join us to make applesauce as they explored states of matter.
Our first PBIS event is a movie and popcorn event on October 4th where we will watch Monster's Inc. Students need 100 dojo points to attend. We will have a school dance at 3:30 that afternoon. K-2nd grade will dance in the cafeteria and 3rd-5th will be in the gym. The dance will cost $5 to attend.
Mark your calendars!
- Our book fair runs from October 7-11.
- We will host 3rd-5th grade fathers at our next All Pro Dad's breakfast on October 8th at 8:00.
- Our curriculum night is October 8th from 4:00-6:00. We are going to celebrate becoming a Showcase School in our Global Leaders program. We will also be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with tacos and a variety of student performances. There will be music, dancing, and parades! Teachers will be sharing information about the curriculum, assessment, and information around how families can support students at home. We will be running the book fair all evening.
- PTO and ESL Night will take place following curriculum night.
- Fifth grade will take science check ins on Wednesday, October 9th.
- Third grade will go on their field trip on Thursday, October 10th.
Our classroom instruction begins at 7:45. If you arrive after the staff have gone in the building, we ask that you park and walk your child into the building to sign them in. We do not have staff supervising the front after the bell rings, and we want students to be safe. It is important for everyone to be on time, so nobody misses out!
If you are interested in your student receiving a take home device to use for homework, please fill out the form here: https://woes.gcs.k12.nc.us/students/11-information.
Please make sure that you are reading with your child for 20 minutes each night. Happy reading!
