4/22/24
April 22, 2024
Two weeks from today many of our Sabers will begin to take Advanced Placement (AP) exams (May 6-May 17). The AP exams are created by the College Board. Success on the exams often can earn students college credit when they go to school after graduation. AP courses and exams are additional indicators of college readiness. We encourage every student to take a course of interest that is a college equivalent (AP, Project Lead the Way, Transcripted Credit, etc.). Remember, while exam preparation and studying is important, success on the exams is the product of seven months of preparation (and years of previous schooling) in addition to the review students do in these last days.
With Saber Pride,

MR. LEVIN TRAVELS TO FRANCE; DELIVERS BELLEAU WOOD IN-MEMORIAM FOR WI SOLDIERS
On the outskirts of the Champagne region of France along country lanes, lies a grove of trees. Filled with hiking trails and quiet today, in 1918 the Belleau Wood was the site of one of the most intense marine battles in history. Stopping the German army's advance towards Paris, the battle along with subsequent battles such as Chateau-Thierry and the Second Battle of the Marne, were critical toward victory. Beside the battlefield lies the Aisne-Marne Cemetery where 2,289 Americans were laid to rest. An additional 1,060 are honored on the wall of the missing.
Using information from the Wisconsin Veterans Museum in Madison, Mr. Levin's Two World Wars class conducted primary source research into Wisconsin soldiers and marines who were killed in this part of World War I. Most were young men drafted to serve in the war. One was a former lumberjack! For each, students created and In-Memoriam page in both English and French to show who these young men were that paid the ultimate price.
During Spring Break, Mr. Levin and his family were honored guests at the Cemetery and were able to place the FHS students' In-Memoriam at each gravestone. Those who tragically had their bodies never found or identified had their In-Memoriam placed at the wall of the missing. On behalf of the class, his family conducted a flagging ceremony for one of the Wisconsin soldiers. For years to come thanks to our Saber students, those who visit Belleau Wood and Aisne-Marne American Cemetery will have a better understanding of our ancestors who paid the ultimate price for Freedom.
