PTO Fundraising Update
At SHES, all families are part of the PTO! The PTO organizes and funds many school and community events during the year and each fall hosts an annual fundraising drive, which creates the budget for the school year. As of today, the PTO has raised $4,500 toward their $13,000 goal. Can you contribute by November 13?
If each family at our school gave $40 per child, we’d meet our goal. However, no gift is too small… the small gifts add up! If you have the means, please consider donating up to $250 per child, a gift that works out to only $25 per month for the ten months of the school year.
Please help our PTO raise $13,000 by November 13th! Your donation directly supports your child’s education. The sooner items can be purchased and programs can be funded, the sooner your child will benefit.
To make a donation, please visit https://www.shespto.org and click “Donate” for a PayPal link.
Need Help with a Carpentry Project!
From the Health Office
Hello Shorewood,
Our SHES community is seeing an increase of colds, viruses and strep. As a reminder, any student that has vomiting or diarrhea must wait 24 hours from the last episode before returning to school and anyone with a temperature over 100.4 must be without fever for 24 hours without fever reducing medications before returning to school.
If your student is diagnosed with strep, they must be on antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school.
We do recommend masking for students that have mild or residual upper respiratory symptoms.
Please reach out if you have any questions regarding this, medications at school, vaccines or accessing health care.
Thank you,
Nurse Lucy
Read-At-Home Tips
Phonemic Awareness
MMSD elementary schools are in our second year of using a phonics-based approach to teaching reading called the science of reading. There are many things you can do with your student(s) at home to support this approach to reading, as well. Over the next few months, I will share some tips you can use. This week is phonics.
Phonics is the ability to understand the relationship between letters and the sounds they represent. This includes:
- Recognizing print patterns that represent sounds
- Syllable patterns
- Word parts (prefixes, suffixes, and root words)
Common Consonant Digraphs and Blends:
bl, br, ch, ck, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, gh, gl, gr, ng, ph, pl, pr, qu, sc, sh, sk, sl, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, th, tr, tw, wh, wr
Common Consonant Trigraphs
nth, sch, scr, ser, spl, spr, squ, str, thr
Common Vowel Digraphs
ai, au, aw, ay, ea, ee, ei, eu, ew, ey, ie, oi, oo, ou, ow, oy
K-1 Phonics Tips:
🔲 Play word games that connect sounds with syllables and words (for example, if the letters “p-e-n” spell pen, how do spell hen?)
🔲 Take a letter and hide it in your hand. Let your child guess in which hand is the letter. Then show the letter and have your child say the letter name and make the sound (for example, the letter m matches the /m/ sound as in man.)
🔲 Write letters on pieces of paper and put them in a paper bag. Let your child reach into the bag and take out letters. Have your child say the sounds that match the letters.
2-3 Phonemic Awareness Tips:
🔲 Many children love to send and receive notes, and writing is a great way to reinforce phonics skills.
🔲 Write vowel and consonant digraphs, trigraphs and blends on cards. Hold up the cards one at a time and have your child say the sounds (for example, the lone e sound /e/ for the vowel digraphs ea and ee).
🔲 Play word games that connect sounds with syllables and words (for example, the letters "l-a-t-e-r" spell later, how do you spell hater? How many syllables are in later?
