WELLNESS WEEK (November 25-29)
What is Wellness Week?
Wellness Week is a week where there is NO SCHOOL.
Wellness Week is used to rest, enjoy time with family, friends and community.
In the United States Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated during Wellness Week.
Thanksgiving is always on the 4th Thursday in November every year.
Thanksgiving is sometimes celebrated with a big meal that includes turkey. However, many families have their own traditional food to eat during this time.
Historically in the United States, the original story of Thanksgiving included a false story of unity and peace between European Colonizers and the Native People of the Americas. We now know that the process of colonizing included displacement of homes and land, violence, torture and death against the Native Americans.
As a way to correct the true history of Native Americans, some people choose to honor Native American ancestors by reflecting on the history, contributions and impact of European colonization on Native Americans. This day is called National Day of Mourning.
WHAT IS NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING for INDIGENOUS PEOPLE?
A day to honor and celebrate the true history and cultures of Indigenous People and to reflect on the impact of European colonization on Native Americans in the United States.
This day is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November every year.
