READING
In our second reading unit, We received a CONFIDENTIAL envelope from the SSDA the Super Secret Detective Agency asking us to do Word Detective Missions. The agency needs well-trained word detectives. We more than happily accepted. We have completed four of five missions so far. Our missions involved using the book A Country Mouse and A Town Mouse to use all that we know to solve words; looking closely across the whole word from start to end; Word Detectives use Everything They Know to Solve Problems (we each got Good Habits for Solving Hard Words chart; and we practiced doing a Slow Check where we check out the words S-l-o-w-l-y. We are enjoying this unit and looking forward to our remaining mission next week.
I sent home a sheet explaining a computer program called Freckle.com that we use during Reading Centers. It has reading, science, and social studies, and math tabs. It would be a great way to enhance your child's learning at home if you are looking for something extra. If you have trouble getting on from the information from the paper, let me know and I can send home your child's log in card that can be scanned into Freckle.com.

We loved playing the game Read My Mind with our table teams to help us work on our most common sight words.

Social Studies
We completed our last lesson in our first unit on Building our Learning Skills by focusing on how to be assertive when we need help. We practiced through fun role playing to be calm, respectful, and look at the person when asking for help. We are working on saying "Excuse me" instead of just blurting out when they need my help and I am working with someone else. The Home Link sheet for this lesson was sent home on Wednesday.

REMINDERS AND UPDATES
Well the weather just doesn't want to cooperate with our Walk a Thon. It was cancelled again which was a huge disappointment but we still had the assembly to announce winners for raising the most money! Also, the pizza party is tonight in the Gym from 5:00-6:30. Everyone gets 2 free slices of pizza and a drink. I'm looking forward to seeing many of you tonight. The plan is walk next Friday at 1:00-2:00 if it doesn't rain!!!!!!!
NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 14TH FOR COLUMBUS DAY! Enjoy the three day weekend.
This was National Fire Prevention Week so we read books about fire safety and firefighting equipment. We even did a scavenger hunt around the school and tallied fire safety items. We found Exits the most and sadly we don't have any sprinklers. We talked about the importance of having working smoke alarms on each floor of our homes, having an escape plan, meeting place, and practicing fire drills just like we do at school. It is also important that your child knows his/her street address even though 911 knows our location, this is just an important piece of safety information for your child.
Remember Thursday is our Library day. Your child checks out three books. Two go home and one stays in his/her desk. Please help your child become responsible by returning all books by the following Thursday. Also, keep the library books in a safe place at home. Thank you for your help!
Every Friday is Meadowview Spirit Day. We are all encouraged to wear RED or any Meadowview related Spirit wear clothes. This is a great way to show our pride in our school!
The next Parent University will be held on Tuesday, October 29th in the LRC from 6:30-7:30 Math will be the focus with a presentation from our district math coach, Michelle Schade.
The Halloween Dance is on Friday, October 25th from 6:30-8:30. Pre-Order your tickets and save money. At the door the tickets are $5.00 and often there are long lines. The first hour of the dance will have lights on for the little ones and a movie will be playing all night in the LRC with coloring and tattoos in the sixth grade hallway.
