Bridge named as a memorial to NHS graduate, army sergeant
On the morning of April 19, the new bridge on Trenton Road over I-295 was named in honor of Neshaminy HS graduate and Army Staff Sgt. Jae S. Moon, who was killed in action while serving in Iraq in 2006. The bridge was recently replaced, and PA Rep. Joe Hogan introduced legislation to name the new span for Sgt. Moon. The bill passed with bipartisan support and was signed by Governor Shapiro.
Moon, was 21 years old and assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo. He died Dec. 25 in Baghdad, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom of wounds sustained there when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while on patrol.
He was born in South Korea but spent most of his life living in Pennsylvania. The Levittown house in which he grew up is in close proximity to the memorial bridge. He graduated Neshaminy High School in 2003. He enlisted in the Army upon graduation and had plans to pursue a career as an FBI agent after his service.
Many dignitaries and family members attended the ceremony, including some of the Army veterans that served with him. At the School Board meeting on April 24, Superintendent Jason Bowman, who also attended the ceremony, said, "It is fitting that this bridge, which is near Herbert Hoover Elemetary School, will be a reminder of this young man's sacrifice for the hundreds or even thousands of people that cross that bridge every day, including many of our own students."

supermarket and their customers fight food insecurity with donations
On April 8, two representatives from the Feasterville GIANT Supermarket, Store Team Lead Bilha Bendel (left) and Store Employee Associate Chrisi Kenney (3rd from left), visited District Office at Maple Point to announce a donation to the district of $15,211.78 as part of the company's Feeding Kids initiative. Accepting the donation was Superintendent Jason Bowman and School Resource Officer Melissa Robison. The donation is the result of customers at both the Langhorne and Feasterville GIANT stores opting to "round up" their purchases to the nearest dollar from January 1 to March 31 as a donation for this initiative. The money will be used to supply the food pantries in our Neshaminy schools and help families and students facing food insecurity. The GIANT company also matched the first $100,000 from their customers with their own donation to this campaign. The GIANT company has raised over $1.5 million across their stores during this campaign to combat childhood hunger in the communities that they serve.
STEAM Expo draws hundreds of students and families
Remington & Vernick Engineers Project Engineer Dominic Cundari and Senior Engineering Technician Alex Swiderski (right), both Neshaminy HS graduates, returned to their alma mater to attend the STEAM Expo and provide a demonstration of stormwater management engineering, one of the services that their company provides.
The 2024 Neshaminy STEAM expo once again gave the hundreds of students that attended an exciting and fun window into the emerging world of science, technology, engineering, art and math both within Neshaminy School District and in our community. The hallways and classrooms at Neshaminy High School were filled with a wide range of activities, everything from robotics and 3-D printers to art and DNA extraction. Dozens of individuals and organizations from the community attended to share their passion for science, technology, history and even some exotic animals with the STEAM Expo crowd. Winners of Science Fairs at the elementary schools also had the opportunity to showcase their projects.
The goal of the STEAM Expo is to spark the imaginations of the elementary and middle school students and build excitement for the possibilities waiting for them at the high school level and beyond. More photos of the 2024 STEAM Expo can be found on the Neshaminy Facebook page here.

NEF Grant in action: Public Speaking Enrichment Game
Submitted by Kate Burke, Honors English and Public Speaking teacher at Neshaminy HS, recipient of a 2023-2024 Neshaminy Education Foundation grant:
Today my Public Speaking students engaged in an interactive communication and problem-solving activity called “Zoom” where they were each given an image that connects to a larger picture. The students were not allowed to show each other their image, but rather had to work together to identify where their image fit into the larger scope by using only their communication skills. Students took turns stepping up as leaders and working together to organize themselves into the correct sequence. I told them they would win doughnuts for the class if they got it right on their first try, as long as nobody cheated. They worked incredibly hard to solve the puzzle and all cheered when they got it right in the end!
An essential component of social and emotional learning is the debriefing session that should occur at the end of every learning activity in order to “deepen students’ understanding, awareness, and practice of SEL skills” (https://ggie.berkeley.edu/practice/reflecting-on-sel-skills/). In our classroom “debrief” of this lesson, students reflected that they took turns listening to each other’s ideas and realizing that they needed to reorganize a few times based on what they heard each other say. They understood that sometimes trying and failing is the only way to achieve success! Some students chose to step up and direct their classmates, while others preferred to stay back and follow their peers’ instructions. Students suggested they were motivated by the end prize, but they also enjoyed the challenge of trying to solve an unknown problem. Students of different grades and social groups all worked together collaboratively while strengthening their interpersonal skills.
According to Catherine Cote of Harvard Business School Online, problem-solving, leadership, and teamwork go hand-in-hand if people are to become productive members of society: “As a leader, it’s rarely your responsibility to solve a problem single-handedly, so it’s crucial to know how to empower employees to work together to find the best solution” (“Why Problem-Solving Skills are Essential for Leaders in Any Industry”). Consequently, it was a true joy to be able to implement 21st century skills in a fun way through the opportunities provided by the NEF Grant I received.

Vaccination requirement reminder
In 2017, Pennsylvania's Department of Health established requirements for school vaccinations. Please review this document from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and consult with your child’s healthcare provider. Communication from the District will continue as a reminder of this PA Department of Health requirement.
District Policy 203 requires that “a certificate of immunization shall be maintained as part of the health record for each student, as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.” Further, the Policy states that “a student who has not been immunized per state regulations shall not be admitted to or permitted to attend district schools unless exempted for medical or religious reasons or provisionally admitted by the Superintendent or designee after beginning a multiple dose vaccine series and submitting proof of immunization or a medical certificate on or before the fifth school day of attendance.”
The requirements allow for the following exemptions: medical reason, religious belief, or philosophical/strong moral or ethical conviction. Even if your child is exempt from immunizations, he or she may be excluded from school during a vaccine-preventable disease outbreak.
Communication from the District will continue as a reminder of this PA Department of Health and Policy 203’s requirements. Please contact your child’s School Nurse with questions.

As holocaust survivors dwindle in number, performers keep their stories alive
On April 8, eighth-grade students at Carl Sandburg MS viewed a powerful theatrical performance centered around the Holocaust by Theater Ariel. Gratz College in Philadelphia partnered with Theatre Ariel to provide a series of performances of the play, which is based on the actual testimonies of 10 Holocaust survivors from the Rochester, New York area. The play was created with middle school and high school students in mind and performances are being staged throughout the Greater Philadelphia area to reach as many students as possible. A Q&A with the actors about the stories was held following the performance.
While actual Holocaust survivors have visited our middle schools in past years, this is becoming more and more difficult as those who were old enough to have memories of that experience are dwindling in numbers. This play is one of many initiatives under way to keep sharing those stories in unique ways for future generations

Inclusion Social is fun for everyone
On April 26 Maple Point held their annual Inclusion Social, an event that Principal Andy Sokol describes as one his favorites of the year. The goal is to provide games and activities that are less overwhelming or overstimulating for those students that are sensitive to sound, light and motion. Funded in part by proceeds of the Maple Point Coffee Cart - which is operated by the learning support students and staff each week at the school - the event features everything from a bounce house and bowling to arts and crafts and volleyball.
The Social was just the final event in a month of activities promoting inclusion, acceptance and understanding. Every Friday in April the Maple Point staff wore “Be Happy In Your Own Shell” t-shirts. PTO President Maria Gatta sponsored an event that supporting our coffee cart where parents could purchase an item from the cart for staff. On April 19, during all the lunches, students in the specialized programs worked on crafts along with the general education population which supported the development of friendships. There was a superhero day, with lots of masks and costumes.
The Inclusion Social allows the special needs students to enjoy an event with their families where sensory exposure and individualized attention is provided so the students can have an awesome time with their friends from across the building.
