Dear Families,
We had a fun and busy short week at the middle school! Here are a few important updates:
Upcoming High Trails Field Trips
All parents/guardians need to register their students for the High Trails trips during the week of September 23rd. A newsletter with details and the registration link was sent out on September 3rd, and you can also find it here.

George Rykovich Stadium Dedication
George Rykovich Stadium Dedication
Save the Date: Friday, October 11th
After gathering community input, we’re excited to announce that the Manitou Springs School Board of Education has officially approved renaming our stadium "George Rykovich Stadium" in honor of our legendary coach, George Rykovich!
Join us for a special dedication ceremony during our varsity football game on Friday, October 11th at 7 PM as we celebrate Coach Rykovich's incredible legacy. We want to pack the stands to honor the man who led the Mustangs to 222 victories and two state championships (1987 & 1990) during his 36 years as head coach.
Coach Rykovich was also formally inducted into the Colorado High School Activities Association Hall of Fame on January 23, 2023—an honor only two Mustangs have received.
Let’s come together as a community to honor Coach Rykovich’s extraordinary contributions to our school and the state. More details will be shared soon—stay tuned! Be part of this historic moment and cheer on the Mustangs!

Nighty-Night, Computer! Why You Should Shut Down Every Night
Many people avoid shutting down their computers at night because they don’t want to reopen all their daily tabs—I'm guilty of this myself, even as a techie! However, leaving your computer on overnight poses a security risk. When your computer is open and logged in, anyone who enters your room has easy access to your sensitive information.
Shutting down your computer each night not only gives it a break, but it’s like restarting it daily, which is crucial for maintaining its performance. A shutdown clears the system’s memory (RAM), closes background processes, and fixes temporary glitches that could slow things down.
Here are some key benefits to shutting down regularly:
- Saves Energy: Turning off your computer reduces electricity use and lowers your energy bill.
- Prevents Overheating: It allows your computer to cool down, avoiding long-term damage.
- Resets the System: Shutting down fixes small bugs and makes it run smoother the next day.
- Preserves Battery Life: For laptops, regular shutdowns help extend battery lifespan.
- Updates and Security: Important updates often require a shutdown, ensuring your system stays secure and up-to-date.
Make sure to shut down properly by going to Start > Power Off (or the Apple logo > Shutdown for macOS users). Avoid holding the power button, as this can force the computer off in a way that may cause harm to the system!
