Pioneer Post
BJHS Week of February 10-14, 2025

We acknowledge and are mindful that Bidwell Jr. High School stands on lands that were originally occupied by the first people of this area, the Mechoopda, and we recognize their distinctive spiritual relationship with this land, the flora, the fauna, and the waters that run near campus. We are humbled that our campus resides upon sacred lands that since time immemorial has sustained the Mechoopda people and continues to do so today.

Attendance Office
Please remember to contact the Attendance Office if your student is going to be absent via email at: aleonard@chicousd.org or call 891-3080 Ext. 41115. Please include your student’s name, the date of absence, and the reason for the absence.
In order to ensure the greatest likelihood of students fulfilling our mission at Bidwell—of being academically, emotionally, and behaviorally ready for high school and beyond—we have a 96% minimum attendance goal for each and every student. Please work with your student to encourage them to get to school even for a class period or two if they have the sniffles, are feeling a little under the weather, or even going out of town for some appointment or trip. 96% means no more than SEVEN all-day absences for the school year. It really does make a difference in terms of their overall academic behavioral and emotional readiness and greatly reduces the stress that they experience from falling behind and missing school.
Saturday Success Academy
Bidwell Families,
In order to help all students maintain positive momentum as the school year progresses, we will be offering Saturday Success Academies on the following dates:
2/22, 3/8, 3/29, 4/12, 4/26, 5/10, 5/17
The purpose of these academies is to provide productive, fun environments for students to strengthen their connection to our school while completing missing assignments and raising their grades under the supervision of a certificated staff member. Besides time for work completion and help, students will have access to engaging enrichment and/or recreational activities as well. Saturday Success Academy is not designed to be a punishment but rather another opportunity to help each and every Bidwell student achieve our goal of at least 95% attendance, zero missing assignments, and zero failing grades. You will receive an invitation if your student has multiple absences, multiple missing assignments, and/or multiple failing/in-danger of failing grades. Space is limited so we will prioritize invitations based on need. Please contact me if you don’t receive an invitation but would like your student to attend Saturday Success Academy.
If you would like to sign up your student for the next Saturday Sucess Academy, complete this sign-up form:

The Messenger
Primetime Lesson for the week of 2/10/25: The Messenger
Parents, please take a minute to watch and discuss these important introductory videos about Bidwell School Culture and Expectations. 😊
This week's focus is on "The Messenger." Over the last couple weeks, we have experienced a huge uptick in conflicts between students. After extensive detective work, most of the conflicts stem from a messenger. As two four-day weeks approach us, we thought this would be a good refresher for our students to watch "The Messenger" video again.
Parent 101 Message of the Week:
Daily and Weekly Check-ins on Aeries
Parents, please remember that the most effective first line of defense for preventing your student from experiencing unnecessary stress related to falling behind on assignments is the daily or even weekly check-in in which you have your student sit down and, for less than five minutes, pull up their Aeries student portal page to look over their current grades and grade books for any potential missing assignments. If you have any questions, please email the teacher directly. If you do not hear back from the teacher within 24 hours, please reply all and include me on the email and we will get the situation worked out. In almost every situation in which a parent does not hear back from the teacher, it is a result of a technological issue rather than the teacher simply not responding.

Staff Recognitions
Out and About Award - Mike Janosz
Mr. Janosz waits for his students to arrive and greets them at the door each day. In addition to his greeting, he's got a big smile on his face. During Nutrition Break, he makes his way into the hallway and assists with supervision which is a huge help to administration. At lunchtime on rainy days, he graciously opens up his classroom to host some of our more energetic students. During this time, students are shooting hoops and Mr. Janosz is tutoring others in math. Impressive! For this reason, I am happy to award Mr. Janosz with the Out and About Award.
Congratulations Mr. Janosz!
Positive Pioneer - Tanner Johns
The worst part about getting an award like Positive Pioneer is trying to figure out who should get the award next. The teacher that I chose to give the award to is one that I have never heard be negative, even though they have had reasons to. Our paths do not always cross but when they do, I am greeted with a genuine, “How is it going?” Not only do they ask, but they are willing to listen even when things are not going great. It has just been in the last few years that I have had the opportunity to get to know this teacher better during our visits in the copy room. When leaving the copy room, I am always filled with admiration for this teacher and am in a better mood than when I went in. Sometimes our conversations are about students, sometimes about our families and other times about teaching in general--no matter what we are talking about our conversations are never negative. The amount of time that this teacher spends outside of the classroom to share with the public how awesome their students are is admirable. If you have never been to one of their concerts you need to go.
I would like to give this month’s Positive Pioneer award to Tanner Johns.
-Marjorie Kucich
Collaborative Colleague - Sabrina Gutierrez
I have watched this person for the last couple of years endlessly bringing students out to pe and electives every day. Never have I seen her be anything but happy or smiling in spite of having some very challenging students sometimes just corralling them to keep them in the realm of a class. She has worked miracles getting students involved into our classes constantly coming up with ideas for inclusion but still being respectful of teachers and always asking if it’s ok beforehand (a true collaborator!). Her positive attitude is infectious and her endless amount of energy is admirable! We are so lucky to have her with us and I hope she stays with us for a very long time. Thank you for working so hard and being a role model for all.
