Dress for Success
As we approach the beginning of the school year, we felt it necessary to share this information with you regarding the 2024-2025 school year. Here, you will find VUSD's dress code policy and examples of inappropriate clothing for school. We hope you find this helpful while shopping for clothing this upcoming school year.
The Governing Board believes that appropriate dress and grooming contribute to a productive learning environment and encourages parents to promote positive, healthy, and safe student clothing choices. The Board expects students to pay proper attention to personal cleanliness and wear clothing that is suitable for the school activities in which they participate. Students shall not wear clothing that presents a health or safety hazard, promotes drugs or other illegal activities, or expresses hate speech as defined in BP 5145.9.
Students shall not be prohibited from dressing in a manner consistent with their gender identity or gender expression or with their religious or cultural observance. Students may wear sun-protective clothing, including hats, caps, beanies, do-rags, and other head coverings outdoors. Students shall be allowed to wear sun-protective clothing, including but not limited to hats and hats with the school logo, for outdoor use during the school day. (Education Code 35183.5) Students without religious accommodations must remove headwear when indoors in the classroom.
Examples of Inappropriate Clothing for School
Steps When a Dress Code Infraction Occurs
- Step 1 - The student will be reminded of the dress code policy and asked to correct the dress code infraction. Students can put on their own alternative. They will be provided with temporary school clothing to wear. If necessary, the student's parent/guardian may be called to bring clothes to school. The student will also lose a PICK Point on our 5-Star system.
- Step 2 - If a student is caught out of dress code compliance, the student will be sent to the office after step 1. In the office they will be receive lunch intervention, and be provided another article of clothing to wear. The student will also lose a PICK Point on 5 Star.
- Students will be tracked regarding dress code infractions on the 5-Star program. Students who have received multiple dress code infractions will receive further consequences, including lunch interventions and possible OCI terms.
