Community Letter
May 19, 2023
Proud Principals!
Dear LISD Families,
As the weather turns nicer and the end of the year comes closer, we get excited to take what we have learned in the classroom to the community. From now until the end of the school year, we have quite a few field trips and events planned. Just recently, we have heard many compliments from adults within our community and in neighboring communities that our students are respectful and kind. Throughout our school community, we focus on our habits of character (kindness, belonging, ownership, perseverance) and it is nice to see our students carrying these habits into their daily lives outside of the school day. Thank you for being strong role models in the lives of our students and modeling kindness, empathy, and positivity.
We are so very proud of our Lobos!
All our best to you and your family,
Mary and Martha

Tour De Lopez
On behalf of the organizers of the 17th Annual Tour de Lopez, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all who attended and volunteered at this fantastic eco-friendly family event. Your enthusiasm, support, and contributions helped make this event a resounding success!
We were thrilled to see so many people come out and enjoy the beautiful rural road tour, which showcased the stunning landscape of Lopez Island. Whether you came for the day or made a weekend of it, we hope you had a wonderful time.
We hope you enjoyed the marked short and long routes, the refueling rest areas with Holly B’s delicious treats, the fantastic buffet lunch by Blue Heron Bistro, the live music by the Lopez Cajun Band & MPPACT, and Brewvado’s beer garden. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces enjoying themselves.
Finally, we want to remind everyone to register early for next year’s event, as it is typically a sell-out with limited registration. Thank you again for your support and participation in the 17th Annual Tour de Lopez. We look forward to seeing you again next year, Saturday, April 27, 2024!
Give Lopez 2023
On behalf of the 15 non-profit organizations that participated in Give Lopez 2023, we would like to thank everyone who contributed during the two weeks of Give Lopez. Together we raised over 117K for our Lopez Island non-profits. Thank you for investing in your community's future. Your ongoing generosity helps support our non-profits to continue their essential work and keeps our community strong and vibrant.
Interview with Graduating Senior, Levi McClerren
What’s your earliest memory at LISD? My first memory is picking the green tray with the crack in the middle in the lunch line, and I always picked that tray with the crack in the middle for the rest of my school days, including senior year.
What clubs/athletics/extracurriculars have you been involved in? I played baseball, soccer, and basketball. Soccer was my favorite for sure. I also did MPPACT for a long while. I started out playing drums and moved on to guitar.
What is one positive memory from your time here that you’ll carry with you forever? I have a lot of good memories, but I’d have to say the camaraderie on the soccer team the last couple years was a highlight.
Finish this sentence: “I cannot live without…….”: Some sort of physical activity….I cannot sit still.
What is the most creative excuse you have ever used to get out of school work? I was never really one to create elaborate excuses, but I’ve definitely said I was still sick when I was actually feeling better. My thing is procrastination.
What is one piece of advice you have for incoming high school students? Don’t focus too hard on the academic side. Make some good memories too. Do extracurricular activities!
What is the most meaningful assignment ever given to you by a teacher? I loved building the gates in the LIFE garden as part of SAP class. I got a lot out of that class. It was fun and seemed to really click for me.
What’s the most important quality in a friendship? Why? I would say the ability to get real and not have just surface level conversation. It’s easy to have superficial conversation but being able to be vulnerable and have meaningful conversations about life is most valuable in building a friendship.
In 10 years, I will be…: I want to be welding….doing custom fabrication work for cars. On the side, I’d like to do real estate….house hacking.
Who/what do you find inspiring? Jordan Peterson. I’ve read his book, Twelve Rules for Life, which is about improving your quality of life through taking on responsibilities in your own life. Also David Goggins. I think about his accomplishments when I’m trying to push myself in the gym. He never gives up.
What song summarizes your feelings about graduating from high school? Everything in It’s Right Place by Radio Head. Everything feels like it really is in it’s right place….like divine timing. Pain is inevitable and a crucial part of growth. I spent a large part of my high school life running away from pain and responsibility but I turned it around.
What are your plans after high school? I’m going to Job Corps for welding. I’m going to get a load, get a truck, and make a welding rig so I can go to work on oil and natural gas pipelines. Then I want to buy my first piece of real estate. I’m also interested in biking across parts of Europe.
What is one important life lesson you learned in kindergarten? Don’t pull the fire alarm during recess. A classmate did that but I witnessed it.
Is there anything else you want people to know about you? I find a lot of value in helping others and being as genuine as possible.

We will be celebrating our graduating seniors that night so come on down and enjoy the fun, food, and be a fan of these phenomenal young musicians.
MPPACT is a student-driven LISD extracurricular led by Jesse Hammond. Created in 2015, this program has since exploded and brought youth music to the Lopez community and beyond. MPPACT isn’t limited by traditional boundaries or genres and these young musicians explore the styles of jazz, rock, classical, R&B, pop, blues, and more. Their shows feature top hits and deep cuts from a virtual musical time warp and are sure to inspire you to smile, sing, and dance. Sports Update...GO LOBOS!
Middle School Track
Yesterday at our MS track prelims, we had quite a few students qualify for finals. Our athletes have worked hard this season, and it has been very rewarding to see a track program grow again at Lopez, with both our MS and HS teams successful in competition.
The following MS students qualified for finals next Thursday:
Amia Poole (Discus)
Avila Sausman (Javelin)
Elsie Learing (Javelin)
Evie Somers (Long Jump)
Colin McDonald (Discus & Javelin)
Huck Henderson (Discus & Javelin)
Iris Ervin-McLean (800 meters)
Nathan Kinney (Shot Put)
Qwynne Sterling (1600 meters)
4x100 meter relay groups
Finalists: Huck, Ian, Seamus, Jack
Alternates: Aliyah, Alivia, Kylie, Iris
Even though not all students qualified for finals, nearly every Lopez student set a PR (personal record) at this meet, meaning the best they have run/thrown/jumped in a competition was at the end of the season when it counted.
