Read Across America Day
March 2 is Read Across America Day, a day to celebrate our favorite activity. The day was established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998 to help get kids excited about reading. The day occurs each year on the birthday of beloved children’s book author Dr. Seuss, so a perfect way to celebrate is to don a Seussian hat and read one his famous tales, like One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. On National Read Across America Day, students, teachers, parents, and community members around the nation come together to read books and celebrate the joy of reading — join us!
WHEN IS READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY 2024?
National Read Across America Day is on March 2. It’s a day to celebrate the privilege of being able to read, so head to the library, or curl up on the couch and just be a bookworm!

Daylight Savings Time Change
🌞⏰ Don't forget to spring forward this weekend! ⏰🌸
Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 10th, which means it's time to set our clocks forward one hour. 🕰️ This small change brings brighter evenings and longer days ahead, so let's embrace the extra daylight and all the possibilities it brings! ☀️✨
Here are a few tips to make the transition smoother:
1️⃣ Set your clocks forward before you head to bed on Saturday night to ensure you're on time for all your Sunday plans. ⏰ 2️⃣ Use this opportunity to check and replace the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors for added safety. 🔋🚨 3️⃣ Take advantage of the longer evenings by enjoying outdoor activities like walks, picnics, or simply relaxing in your backyard. 🌳🚶♂️ 4️⃣ Remember to adjust your sleep schedule accordingly to ensure you're well-rested and ready to tackle the week ahead. 😴💤
Let's welcome the change with open arms and embrace the brighter days ahead! ☀️🌻

Teacher Success Stories
Congratulations to Mrs. Annie Williams on her prestigious selection as a participant in the Fulbright Teacher Exchange. Mrs. Williams attended the 2024 Global Education Symposium in Washington, DC, a cornerstone event of the Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The symposium offered a unique platform for her to connect with fellow educators, engage with experts in global education, and participate in enriching workshops aimed at enhancing educational practices. Mrs. Williams' upcoming journey to India this summer as part of the Fulbright TGC cohort is a remarkable opportunity to further bridge cultures and bring invaluable global perspectives back to our community. We are incredibly proud of her achievements and grateful for her contributions to our district. Please join me in celebrating Mrs. Williams' accomplishment and supporting her in this extraordinary educational endeavor.
Congratulations to Ms. Herbert for her recent success in the MOCOA (Mineral Area Council of the Arts) writing competition! This annual event offers categories for both adults and students in essay, poetry, and short story. World Teen Mental Wellness Day...March 2, 2024
WHY WORLD TEEN MENTAL WELLNESS DAY IS IMPORTANT
Awareness is essential
While we have come a long way from before, there is still a lot left to do. A lot of mental health issues go unrecognized and untreated due to a lack of awareness about the topic. Parents and caregivers of teens, and teens themselves, need to be educated and aware to ensure a better future.
The stigma needs to end
People with mental health issues have been stigmatized in our society for a long time. The negative connotations associated with mental illnesses and those who suffer from them are innumerable. These are baseless and rooted in myths and make people less likely to get help. We need to end this stigma, and increasing awareness is a good first step.
A reminder that it’s okay to not be okay
For those who are suffering, especially silently, it can seem like nobody understands and that they are all alone in this battle. This day is a step to let teens know that they are not alone, that it’s okay to feel the way they feel, and that there is plenty of help available.

It's a rewarding journey that fosters a sense of responsibility, empathy, and leadership. Check with Mrs. Scott for information on upcoming opportunities.
Latin Honors
Striving for Latin Honors is a commendable goal for students pursuing academic excellence. Latin Honors are awarded based on a student's cumulative grade point average (GPA), Community Service, Attendance, 30 hour Internship, and attend one FSD Board Meeting during your Junior or Senior Year. If you have questions or need further information about graduating with Latin Honors, reach out to Mrs. Scott in the library or Dr. Reeves in the iLab, as they can provide you with specific guidance and answer any questions you may have regarding the process and requirements for achieving Latin Honors at FHS. They can also provide information on any deadlines or additional steps you need to take to be eligible for this academic distinction.
