Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 7th June 2024
Remembering D-Day
Being interviewed by Look North
Canon Matthew explained the significance of the anniversary of D Day.
Knitted tank
This week as a school we reflected on the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. The children thought about the sacrifice that was made by so many brave soldiers and how D-Day was a key event in the war. A group of Year 6 children went to the Cathedral where they lay roses by the sculpture of a soldier. They were filmed by Look North and also interviewed about their thoughts on the significance of the anniversary. As always, the children represented the school brilliantly.
Burger Showdown
Burger Bake Off
As part of Year 6's design technology work they designed and made burgers that included ingredients from different countries and cultures. The children learnt how to make a patty (vegetarian and meat) and explored different garnishes that could be added to make a tasty product. The burgers were judged by Mrs Rich and Mrs Shawcross who chose the Indian chickpea spice burger as the winner. The winning team were taken out to a local burger establishment as a reward for winning the competition.
Year 2 Visit Whitby
A Wonderful Day in Whitby
What an amazing day for our geography trip to Whitby. We explored human geography by looking at the life and purpose of the Lifeboat Museum, the fishing community and how this links to settlements and human behaviour through time. We also explored physical geography of the beach, cliffs, estuary of the river, land formation and coastal erosion.
Whitby Discovery Centre is Whitby’s only aquarium. We learned lots about local marine wildlife, Whitby’s fishing heritage and the Whitby Lobster Hatchery! Who can remember what colour lobsters usually are? 🦞
The Whitby RNLI Lifeboat Museum is a Victorian double boathouse celebrating Whitby’s lifeboat history. The museum is a treasure trove of paintings, medals, photographs and mementos from famous wrecks and rescues. We learned lots about the history of the RNLI, their lifesaving missions and the 104-year-old lifeboat which has been restored. We even had a try on of the life jackets to compare those used then and now.
School Updates
Earrings
You will recall that we notified parents and carers in April about changes to our uniform and jewellery policy. For health and safety reasons we are taking the approach that all jewellery must be removed for physical education lessons. We recommend where children are unable to remove earrings that they are not worn to school on PE days. If children do have earrings in that they cannot remove, for their safety and the safety of others, they will not be allowed to participate in PE lessons.
Sports Day - Thursday 13th June 2024
Weather permitting, our annual Sports Day is scheduled to be on Thursday 13th June 2024.
Children in the Early Years (Reception and Nursery) will have their races in the morning at around 9am - do stay if you can after drop off. Children in Years 1-6 will have their events in the afternoon from 1.30pm until around home time.
Please ensure that children have the following with them:
- Black shorts and plain white t-shirt (no jogging bottoms please)
- Sun cream (all day creams are great. Children can bring their own but should be able to self apply)
- Water bottles (with water!)
- Suitable sun hat
For safety reasons, we do ask that children do not wear jewellery (this includes earrings).
I am sure we will have a great day.
Cracking Colour Run 2024

Duck Race Wednesday 26th June
New Date for The Duck Race
The poster date is incorrect as we had to postpone due to weather that was too awful even for ducks! We are more hopeful for Wednesday 26th June, 5pm at Fisher Green. Many of you have already bought your duck's number, but more will be on sale soon. Just look out for the Friends in the playground, recognisable with the duck fishing pole!
In other news, this year's Summer Fair has had to be cancelled. Unfortunately, the committed but small group of Friends feel unable to take on this large task without more support and thus time has run out to organise the event. However, they have started planning for a full calendar of events next school year including some new ideas. It would be great if a few more parents could offer a little regular support to ensure events go ahead. This is not a huge time commitment but does need to be regular, and all meetings and events are good fun to be involved in. Please contact rcpsfriends@gmail.com
